Conservatives don’t understand the concept of democracy because they don’t understand why they should have to share power at all. They know there’s one common sense solution to every problem that you can learn by trusting your gut, your preacher, and the guys on the radio. Just elect any Real American and they’ll all know exactly what to do, while anyone who disagrees must be part of the Liberal Hoax that’s distorted all reality since Rush Limbaugh became popular in the 90’s.
Conservatives don’t have a double standard. There’s only one standard: They win, always.
You didn’t hear about any lame duck Democratic majorities pulling this crap in the last 2 decades because Democrats, despite all evidence to the contrary, persist in believing they are still legislating in a democracy. As noted above, the Republicans have gone to some crazy place where their will has replaced the will of the people because of the baby Jeebus or the ghost of Reagan or some such insane bullshit. They are no longer fighting to win as much as they are fighting to undermine democracy, and they feel righteous about it because democracy keeps spitting in their eye when given half a chance.
Cheating to achieve an undemocratic result is what the gerrymandering, shortened voting hours and voter ID and other voter suppression tactics are all about.
As a liberal Wisconsin Union Thug (er… ex-union since those fuckers destroyed it), I don’t think they realize what they will unleash if they attempt this. Madison folks just love to protest and we’re itching for a fight. Vos and Fitzgerald are both deeply hated here for their parts in Act 10, and the Capitol would once again be swarmed with dirty hippies (and cause millions and millions of dollars in damage by… uh… putting tape on things!). I marched for hours in the cold and snow, and I just got new long-johns so I’m more than ready to do it again.
Wisconsin is not North Carolina. There is a grand tradition of ‘good government’ here, and if the state weren’t so heavily gerrymandered (the particulars of that are another shameful event in our recent history), Vos and Fitz would be shoveling shit somewhere. The people have a strong sense of fairness here (Walker won his recall election in part because many folks thought it was unfair to have another election when he didn’t do anything illegal), and this would not go over well at all; not just Madison but statewide.
The Republican party is a fascism party. Individual republicans are fascists. They keep showing you this. They are not going to stop. They are not interested in democracy except insofar as it can be twisted to their authoritarian ends. What Thomas Mann and Norman J. Ornstein described six years ago as an insurgent outlier was the fascist party maturing. But they will be treated as a normal political party, and thereby obtain an important advantage in advancing their fascist agenda. MAGA!
