Discussion: Wisconsin GOPers Want To Block Local Governments From Issuing Voter IDs

Discussion for article #244260

The Constitution clearly states that only Expensive State Issued Photo IDs can be used as proof of voting eligibility. Look it up!!

Are these people under some kind of a curse that requires them to do a new stupidly evil act every day? Because this one is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

WI included local photo IDs in their 2016 budget for Pete’s sake. How dumb do you have to be to not know the difference between a local city ID and a State issued ID? Essentially, Republicans in WI are still trying to solve a problem that simply does not exist…namely voter fraud. Honestly, if MI (where I hail from) and WI switched Governors and their legislatures, no one would notice the difference. They’re both that bad at what they do. They’re both corrupt, and they both waste endless amounts of time making laws that have no benefit to anyone in either State but themselves and their fucking campaign donors.

Sooner or later poor people, immigrants, the aged, college students, gays, blacks, women, atheists and academics will finally realize they suck and The Founding Fathers (insert Hallelujah Chorus here) had NO INTENTION that they meddle in the affairs of this nation. OR GET FRICKING STUFF FOR FREE!!! GRRR!!!

More of that “local control” that GOP politicians crave so badly.

Aren’t they sweet?

The WI Voter ID law already enacted and on the books already precludes for voting the use of such IDs as Milwaukee is talking about issuing. What Milwaukee is doing has nothing to do with voting or a ‘voter ID’.

Wanggaard and Sanfelippo are doing the WI equivalent of voting to repeal ObamaCare for the 57th time: riling the base while actually accomplishing nothing.

I used to believe the GOPs attempts to undermine government at every level and every turn were subconscious, like some kind of verbal tic. I thought it was simply a manifestation of their belief that government can’t work. To me, they were like a guy who thinks he’s fat, unattractive, and unlovable, so he eats horribly, doesn’t take care of himself, and behaves like an ass. Nope, this is purposeful. They genuinely enjoy hurting people and destroying government. It’s not a means to an end, this is the intended result. I don’t even think they believe they’re working toward a greater good anymore.

Is Wisconsin really so red as to have voted in this majority and keep them in after all thats happened? Or is it simply gerrymandered to hell? Any locals willing to offer the rundown?

Nationwide, Republicans have nothing of substance–nothing at all–to offer us. Taking over remote government buildings in protest of a legal government action (and even the citizens which the protesters claim to support want nothing to do with these yahoos); screaming stupid, tired old questions about sexual dalliances two decades old–and exhaustively investigated, mind you–at Hillary Clinton; attempting to break federal law regarding refugee relocation; Republican elected officials offering support to federal lawbreaking militias; the leading GOP contender for the presidential nomination, Donald Trump, proud to say things out loud and in tweets that ISIS uses to recruit jihadis to kill our military boys and girls and pretty much anyone who gets in their way or just plain don’t believe will get to fuck 47 virgins or whatever the number is; Carly bitching about Hillary Clinton possibly using the vagina card … has used it herself on more than one occasion – right old “girl?”. On and on.

This, America, is only just a glimpse of the Republican Party. Seriously. They have not one thing of substance to offer we the people to either really protect us and not go all war-on-the-world or that will actually better our lives. Take from this what you will.

I live in SD. We require an ID for voting. I use my driver’s license. It’s not a big deal.

The D Party spends a huge amount of effort on opposing voting ID requirements. What should be done is spending the same effort getting IDs for people. It is now January, and voting will occur in 11 months. Either time can be spent protesting the requirement, or time can be spent getting folks registered with appropriate IDs. You get to choose. Both cannot be done.

This is really done because, in their hearts, Republican leaning lawmakers actually prefer “skinny” women compared to obese ones —

By local control, they mean the most local government entity that they control.

The Constitution EXPLICITLY states that only White, Land-Owning Males have the Right to Vote!

Republicans are just trying to uphold the Founder’s ideals.

And these are the people who cloak themselves as Christians and patriots?? Shameful!!

If it’s no big deal, why do Republicans push so hard for it?

Oh, right, because if you Don’t have a Driver’s license (and there are a lot of people who don’t, particularly in more urban areas), it rapidly gets expensive and tough.

Note that most absentee voting doesn’t require an ID when casting that ballot… And the allowed reasons for absentee ballots tend to favor white voters…

Once again, the Republicans raise the false banner of “voter fraud” to make it harder on people they don’t want voting. Well so far the only statistics I’ve seen on voter fraud tend to identify people like Ann Coulter and various other Republicans voting illegally. Hell, several of those identified, have even been Republican Lawmakers.

Of course I"m sure that they’re just doing it to be sure that the flood of “illegal immigrants” and the “fake refugees” don’t come in and flood the ballot boxes with votes for Democrats.

What I don’t get is why are they being so wishy washy about it? Go full on and show how stand up they are…Only allow wealthy white male landowners with a net worth in excess of $500,000 to vote. Anything less, like this proposal, is just nibbling around the edges. Go eat the entire cake, dammit!

What is “philosophically” interesting here is that the GOP is advocating a centralized validated ID… at the state level. Of course, we should have one at the national level, and in fact RealID is basically a federated (delegated to the states) national ID standard. All of that should be a Democratic party goal too. A strong national government that knows exactly who is who, where they live and what rights they have in relation to driving, benefits, etc.

In an ideal world the system of identification would be a separate issue from who gets to be in the national community and who is excluded. In this imperfect world we’ve got GOP advocacy for a good idea - a psudeo national ID card - but evil GOP efforts to keep selected groups from having them.

Maybe Democrats should double down and endorse state RealID / national ID cards, and focus on getting them to every eligible voter.
