The FoxNews talking heads simply can’t get over the fact that both Barack and Michelle Obama are considerably smarter than any of them. You don’t need to look any further to understand a lot of the vitriol.

So you haven’t seen her test scores, grades, admission package and know nothing about her admission to law school, but it’s acceptable to say ‘she probably got in because of affirmative action’??

I see lots of people who are where they are due to both Affirmative Action AND “my daddy gave big bucks or knew someone”. No doubt. And after seeing Michelle Obama speak it was quite clear she is in NO way the former. And after seeing George Bush speak (or attempt to speak), he was clearly the latter.

I think a stuck clock may have been somewhat right in this case. Due to the institutional discrimination at many of the nations top colleges and law schools (aw hell, just colleges and law schools in general), Affirmative Action was implemented, making Admissions Officers actually have to ensure they weren’t discriminating and were admitting at least some minorities. Michelle and Barak Obama probably did benefit from Affirmative Action programs, not because they needed them for admission on the merits of their intellects/capabilities, but since they weren’t born to a white privledged family that could guarantee their entrance… even without a DUI.

Finally, a comment that recognizes that Affirmative Action has a purpose and to benefit from it is not a matter of shame. If Affirmative Action came into play for either of the Obamas, it was to make the AOs fixed their admissions process which “accidentally” screened out non-white applications. Things like not using the applicant’s current zip code or city of birth (or GENDER for that matter) as a scoring factor, which was done until Affirmative Action came along.

Fox likes to use it to mean “unjustified advancement.” Yet they are strangers to the word “Privilege” which has led to unjustified advancement of lots of white people since forever. That Fox out of the other side of their mouth seeks out people the right gender and skin color to advance their racist and sexist agenda is the real irony here.
