Here’s my wild theory: Governor of Puerto Rico Ricardo Rosselló, with the assistance of the DNC and “Hollywood,” threatens to evacuate all voting age residents to Alabama and begin campaigning for Doug Jones, unless he starts getting real goddamn help, like, yesterday.
Look, I don’t even know what the registration deadline is in Alabama, and it sure as hell isn’t actually feasible. But bluster is the language this idiot speaks.
Alabama’s electronic paperless voting machines will ensure a Moore victory.
Do. It. The chance is worth the loss. A win would be a huge blast of dynamite across the political spectrum.
The best chance Jones has is if black women support him. They are the backbone of the South.
No. Don’t “go big.” “Big Luther” Strange was hurt because of support from national Republicans. If Democrats come in with big bucks and national anti-Moore spots, that will only play into his hands. Individual Democrats who can should contribute to Jones’ campaign (I have, modestly), and if they can even go to Alabam’ to campaign for him. But the national party should sit on the sidelines. Even the DSCC should play at most a modest role.
(Jones could roll out a slogan like, “Elect Moore and we won’t be able to say, Thank God for Mississippi any more.”)
Great idea but you’ll have to run it by Chuck and Nancy - and the DNC - to get approval.
Only kidding (kinda) but who does make that decision?
“Alabama’s obviously tough territory but this is a special situation,” Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) told TPM on Thursday. “We believe Alabamans will want someone who they will be proud of, someone with character and integrity, and that’s Doug Jones. That is not Roy Moore.”
I admire optimism. Even when that optimism is totally misplaced.
15 days before the election. So Nov. 27th for the Dec 12 general election.
The problem Jones is running head into is he is already lacking the most precious of commodities…time. He has two months to build, and execute a state wide campaign in a heavily republican state, with some pretty draconian voter suppression practices.
“He also needs well-trained staff ready to help build a field operation from scratch in a state where Democrats have almost no infrastructure, a costly and more time-consuming process that takes early investment and needs to happen now.”
Now is probably already too late. The odds would be against him even if he had that ready to “plug in” yesterday.
That being said,I am already going over it in my head what both my local folks can do to help (phone banking type stuff) and possibly even seeing if they could use me. But many people tell me I am a glutton for punishment.
For a story that seems to be primarily about Doug Jones, it’d be nice to head it with a picture of Doug Jones (rather than Roy Moore playing cowboy again) and maybe the name Doug Jones in the headline. Just a suggestion, not only for TPM but all media. This is what happened with Trump - pictures, video, headlines, all the talk about him - it all helped drive his campaign with free advertisement and the buzz that the election was all about him. Low info voters, especially are going to look as far as the picture and the name. Details aren’t going to get through - no time to read the story or pay attention - or get in the way of the overall “feel” for a candidate.
Democrats need to make a push in this race whatever the outcome. And they need to make a decision PDQ.
Seems like a bridge too far.
God says, “don’t thank ME for Mississippi, you bastards.”
But the big GOP national money and special interest national money is likely to flow in for crazy Moore, as well. That bullet can be weaponized back as well. Unless Moore is going to turn down National help? That’s unlikely.
I am not so sure about that. He scares the crap out of a lot of big GOP donors, who have seen this particular dance one too many times. And the GOP fundraising machine is drying up over all since Trump got elected, both from small donors and the big time donors.
Unless they see millions starting to flow in like we saw in GA-06, I suspect they largely stay out of the way.
This will be another example of why Nancy pelosi and the Clinton-Obama establishment needs to go. The old Democratic party and the party of labor and the middle class would be very aggressive at winning in Alabama. But with Pelosi…she’ll follow the directions of our biggest corporations!
I hope you are right.
But some of those funders are also crazy. With Bannon pushing this - certainly some Mercer $$ is going to flow in.
Total bullshit and not supported by the facts.
Ms. Pelosi has no control over how the DSCC or the DNC deal with Senate elections.
I live in Alabama and am all in for Doug Jones. I am hoping that the National Party comes in at least to help organize. The best shot for Jones is that this is a special election and Moore/Trump are going to scare a large subset of the population. Getting that subset to the polls is key. At the organizing meeting I went to, they are doing what they can, but it will take a large effort to reach smaller pockets of D voters (e.g. Hispanic population in Marshall County).
If (and I know it’s a big if), Jones can pull off an upset, it will (1) scare Republicans into greater accountability relative to Trump, (2) almost certainly save Obamacare, (3) make a 2018 Senate takeover only based on two holds (MO and IN) and two likely conversions (AZ and NV), and (4) stop a total nutjob from being in the Senate.
In other words, high risk and high reward.
Putin wanted Moore over Luther?
