There’s some useful academic work on both why people continue to believe in conspiracies after they’ve been given contrary evidence and on general problems in thinking/decision-making. Of course, Republicans invested in the “disaster” that was Benghazi have to continue to believe it. And that the IRS “scandal” was real, that Obama is a socialist/emperor/king (who also happens to be ineffectual). Holding logically contrary positions is no problem at all.
Regarding thinking - in some ways, we are all “confident idiots,” although it sure seems that the Republicans have taken more than their share of this appellation. It’s frustrating trying to have a conversation with someone to whom your brilliant, fact-based riposte is parried with “that proves my case.” (Or, in the case of Kansas, "it just takes more time for my bad economic ideas to turn our state revenues around).
But until we get some agreement that logic, facts and science matter, this debate probably won’t get much better.

Exactly, the media wants ratings. Since there is a market for conservative conspiracy theories, they will gladly put it on the air. Plenty of low info conservative voters for that. When it comes to things like “Truther’s”, the overwhelming majority of liberals know they are nuts, so there is no market for it. Even far left sites like Pacifica and liberal sites like Salon and Alternet don’t give Truther conspiracies any time because sophomoric idiocy is not marketable to most liberals.

Next you’ll be claiming that the administration of a black president editing talking points relating to a ongoing crisis shouldn’t be receiving greater scrutiny from congress than the previous administrations outing of a CIA agent as a political reprisal for said agents spouse not toeing the party line. Kind of a derail, but I’d also caution to not fall too much into the trap that “truthers” have a left leaning bent on the whole or are majority liberals. All too often I’ll hear conservatives throw the conspiracy nut conversation back with “well yeah but there are liberals who think Bush planned 9/11” as a false equivalency. Not only are “truthers” not taken very seriously by anybody (and certainly not given the time of day by any so-called liberal media outlet), from a lot of my experiences they tend to be more in line with the quasi-libertarian Alex Jones types that are truly tinfoil hat insane. Most “truthers” I’ve run into are anything but liberals.

Though Huffpo isn’t above dabbling in them, at least during their embryonic stages. I’m still waiting for that site’s acceptance of blame and apology for giving Robert Kennedy a platform that helped really get the antivax movement rolling. Because, unlike conspiracy theories about Obama’s birth certificate or Benghazi, that one has actually killed people.
Of course, the antivax deaths would pale in comparison to the mass extinction event Inhofe and Exxon seem hellbent on bringing us.

Read the article and comments on the guy from the Redskins who got a gig on HP and is a Truther. I got debate from a few people on here who are liberals, to the point of calling me all kinds of crazy names for stating facts. There are plenty of liberal truther’s in “number”, though they are still an extreme minority percentage wise, yes.
But agreed, most of them are more the Alex Jones nut job types. If the majority of Truther’s were liberals, they would get lots of air time on MSM. That was pretty much my point, liberals are smart.
They Alex Jones crows just hates ALL gubbermint. Jones is smart, good market niche for those nuts. A minor percentage of people, but they are very loyal and will fall for anything anti-gubbermint.
I recall some conservatives who actually thought when Obama got elected he was going to make RFK Jr. the head of the EPA. Lunacy, but a good scare tactic for the conservative base.

I still can’t get my head around the fact that this is all they’ve got. I made a real effort to understand what they were talking about and… that’s all folks. Just shouting, which in and of itself is enough for the rubes.
