Discussion: Why Jeff Sessions’ Final Act Could Have More Impact Than Expected

Just one more of the thousands of things it’s going to take a generation to fix when (and if) this nightmare ever ends.

Would Groucho have said “You don’t need no darned oversight. Get new glasses!” ?

Might as well get it over with and rename it appropriately…

The US Department of Injustice.

This is best understood as a retreat from Federalism and should have been presented that way in the article.

So can this be reversed once we have a sane administration?

Can’t the next (Dem) AG simply reverse this policy?

It appears more and more that we need legislation (or, sadly, perhaps an amendment) that from the moment someone resigns or is fired with a future exit date, only day to day administration is allowed. No policy changes for anyone with zero accountability as they’re heading out the door.

I imagine that a number of civic rights organizations are firing up the preparation for yet another law suit against this Administration and the DOJ.

Side note - I’ve been out for a few days - but is there a reason so few (none?) of the recent articles have a link to get to the comments on that article? It’s annoying - and when I am reading from the phone (on the fly) I am not investing the time to do a whole lot of navigating to get to the comments.

They’ve been having site wide issues with the commenting software. They are aware of it and working on it. It’s seems to come and go.

Thanks - my default is “I must not be seeing something obvious”, but after several visits… thought I’d ask.

Guess we just need to exercise that patience/virtue thing.

“Just before he left, the departing attorney-general adopted a policy to limit the Justice Department’s ability to oversee abusive police departments.”

Because, of course, the last thing the Trump administration wants to do is limit abusive behavior by abusive police departments. They want to encourage it. This is one thing Jeff and Donald agree on completely.

You know it makes a mockery of we’re all equal under the law. If I live in one city with good policing because of civilian oversight, or city council oversight and the next city/town over is really run by the city attorney and police chief then there will be problems, as seen in Ferguson and other places.
So if you rich, white, and males you get top of the line “equality” and if you’re poor black or brown you may be honored to be a US citizen but without all the rights.

He really is a spiteful little goblin

For how long? Can the next administration, or even the next AG, easily override this policy - and if not, why not?

Then the Feds must keep their military surplus to themselves.

I have tended to take that stance in the past, but the recurring problems are getting a bit old.

Especially in light of the increasing requests for more money (i canceled my Prime membership a while back because I saw little value in it), I’m beginning to wonder if continued visits to the site are worth my while, let alone my money.
