Discussion: Why Is Outside Money Spending Six Figures To Win A State Judgeship?

Discussion for article #228878

Someone wants every old white conservative shut-in to have this kind of a night:

“He also has a history of six-figure donations to the RSLC.”

How did we ever get to this point?

Here’s my simple formula.

First, a dying oldstream media, overwhelmed by a better instrument of communication (the web) and desperate for ad revenues, surrendered its 4th Estate duty in exchange for passively promoting Citizens United rather than vehemently opposing it.

Second, the dying cult of conservatism claims in its membership some of our wealthiest citizens, who gain much more in return for their political investment than any other expenditure, bar none. They are both fiscally and ideologically focused (the former being the most important). The real objective is to protect their greedy profits from wages, healthcare and job safety, all accomplished by owning politicians through campaign contributions and junket joy-rides…

Does anyone know how much cash Brownback has saved the Kochs with his draconian tax cuts? No doubt, that figure dwarfs the peanuts they throw at the political process.

When the dying media decided to cash in, these struggling billionaires and multi-millionaires were glad to pay the piper, so they could call the tune.

Unfortunately, there is a mass of Tea Mob maniacs out there, willing to dance to their music, all the way to the polls. Their prejudices and rabid hostility aren’t fiscal, but comes from decades of right wingnut media, pounding lies and distortions and fears into their amygdala-focused brains, enabling those struggling billionaires to use social issues to mask their financial motives.

OK, maybe that isn’t so simple, but it is the truth.

It is hard to imagine where the value in investing in this demographic, the parents of the hippie generation (i.e. Boomers). We’re talking about octogenarians and even nonagenarians, who might still get worked up about hippies. Has somebody fallen out of a time machine here?

Democrats and liberals need to found a special advertising division whose only purpose is to expose, discredit and destroy donors like Sinquefield. Is it nice? Of course it’s not. I’m not concerned with nice, I’m concerned with providing consequences for rich tools who want to make noise. I’m sure they have family members who wouldn’t like their little lives exposed. How many abortions did Donor X’s mom have? Is donor’s wife hooked on painkillers? Maybe his kids are just bad people. It’s a shame to have all that stuff exposed. Such a terrible, terrible shame.

This is semantic hairsplitting, but I disagree on a fundamental level, although I get your point. The advertising shouldn’t be “nice” but the thought we are defending democracy surely is.

the boomers ARE the hippie generation

This is a very good demonstration of why an elected judiciary is incompatible with justice.

Ruled against farmers.

What a perfect distillation of conservative jurisprudence, and it runs all the way up to the Supreme Court. The Republican judge’s job is to support the Republican tribe, by reading whichever law whatever way is necessary to achieve the desired result.

You would think that even conservatives in the Show-Me State would blanch at allowing a judgeship to be bought.

Spot-on.

Au contraire!

They’re the ones who want to buy the judges.

“somebody is trying to purchase the judgeship” ~ pretty much it

Why, buying and selling Judges is the ordinary course all over the South and in a lot of northern states as well. In most states an individual doesn’t get a fair shake now. The Supreme Court doesn’t even hold itself to the same ethical standards of the rest of the judciary. Its members attend Koch funded political events and Justice Thomas’ wife runs a lobby operation. Tell me there is no corruption there.

Historically Missouri has been one of the few states that placed a positive value on an independent judiciary. I am sad to see that it is falling under the influence of Citizens United.

Why would tie dye make anyone dislike this judge? This ad actually makes me like her more, and I’m no youngster.

You own the judges you own the nation’s law and thus the nation. The Supreme Court is already packed and now they want lower court judges so they have more to move into any new federal positions that open.

Same here, but we’re probably “them”.

So…is it still not guillotines time yet?

Better get used to this exact scenario playing out more and more thanks to our 5 conservative friends on the Supreme Court.

I typically find negative ads, whether about a candidate or a product, make me like the person or thing being attacked more. I doubt I’m the only one who feels that way.
