Discussion: Why I’m Against The Ashley Madison Hack—Except In The Case Of Josh Duggar

The tough lesson is that you’re never going to be private when it comes to the internet. Debating whether it is moral or right for hackers to release private information is irrelevant. This is a classic Pandora’s Box situation and it was opened the minute we all started putting our lives online. Any attempts to close it will only make things worse with harsh restrictions and severely limited rights and liberties. It’s best we all accept the danger and proceed with caution.

I don’t see it as a justification of adultery … I do see limitations on sexual activity as an unavoidable side effect of permanent pregnancy. And that sexual satisfaction reduces the temptation to adultery.

Taking two young strangers and throw them into bed together with one of the couple thinking that his needs always control is not a recipe for sexual satisfaction for either party.

The hackers should not be punished for this, is after all public service. Their names and addresses should be published so former cheatees can go and thank them personally.

On a slightly different topic, I haven’t seen a plea from Huckabee about forgiving Jared as of yet. Is that because he wasn’t committing incest too? Or is forgiveness entirely dependent upon the size of the check you write his campaign?

I just looked it up, you’re right. Adultery is a crime in most states, but I’d hardly call those who commit adultery criminals.

I highly doubt that was the point AJM was making.

Yep. I’m sure it’ll go something like this: > “Well, I spoke to Josh. This account was set up for one reason and one reason only – and that was for his job, yes, his job with the Family Values, Inc. You see, he initially set up the account for observational purposes, but then it quickly became a counseling sorta thing. Yes, he was a bit deceitful to the many women who responded to his account, but he counseled to step out of their evil, wicked ways … and, of course, to walk with Jesus.” (Once they got dressed, that is.)

Yeah, that seems like entrapment to me. I mean, just look at Elizabeth Hurley as the devil in Bedazzled.

Accusations of FauXians being targeted.

Is Jared an evangelical Republican? If not, Huckabee won’t be offering his forgiveness. However, I’m sure he’ll be linking Jared Fogel’s behavior to some breakdown in morals caused by liberal policies and the separation of church and state. If we’d just had prayer in school, Jared wouldn’t have molested a bunch of teenage girls. If only…

I’m not saying it’s not on the statue books. I’m saying it won’t hold up in court anymore. Sodomy is on the statute books in a ton of states and is unenforceable, post Lawrence.

Oh, and he made sure to leave money on the dresser.

I hope the floral quilt I ordered from Ashley Madison arrives before any sexually available married people I’ll meet on Laura Ashley…

Well, I’m betting that if there is a way to apply a political leanings test to the folks who have accounts, Republicans and other “conservatives” will win, hands-down. Say 2 to 1.

While I agree that publishing private details of individuals is pretty icky, part of me hopes that Gawker finds out that FalafelBoy49 turns out to be Bill O’Reilly.

Actually, Josh Duggar just issued a statement admitting that he was unfaithful but blaming it on pornography (i.e. he watched and it turned him into a cheater).

“Well, we are from Arkansas, you know.”

When Matthew writes about hypocrites having no reward in Heaven, because they already have their reward in full, he forgets to mention the giant target they also paint on their backs, inviting their fellow earth dwellers to come see them taken down a peg.

I don’t really care one way or another about Ashley Madison, except that it shows a fundamental flaw in the way people think about the internet - namely, that its capable of keeping secrets. It is not.

I’m an IT Director for a financial services company here in Canada, and part of my job is network security. I’ve never claimed nor will I claim to be brilliant, but I know enough about my line of work to confidently state the following - if a secret is on the internet, there’s no guarantee it remains secret.

Enhanced network security can be expensive to maintain and is generally reserved for mission-critical, high-value data - and 99% of what we put on the internet fails to meet that criteria. There’s also a very human factor in all of this - namely, any bitter junior developer can wreak havoc if they have access to the right data. No amount of fancy security can prevent that from happening, and when you read about companies like Amazon (who dominates the internet’s “back-end”) and the way they treat developers… you’ve gotta come to the conclusion that NO data is really safe.

One of the great failures in public education in my country (and probably the US?) is the complete lack of education about the internet - which is terrifying, as it is really the foundation of modern society. You don’t need to know how to write PHP or install a LAMP stack to understand the basics of the internet, and more importantly how to use it safely.

WTF? First what you’re saying is utter bullshit and second it has nothing whatsoever to do with someone cheating, its an oft used excuse by cheating men, but again, its utter bullshit.

Agree. I can only speak about the woman with whom I have children, but she is VERY interested in sex while she’s pregnant
