Depends who is running for reelection, and if he/she is in trouble. Women and minorities hate Trump, so where the race is will determine a lot. Duh!
One need not go back to 1964 to remember Republicans with a greater commitment to the nation than to their party. Although they were not presidential elections, many Republicans “crossed over” in the 1991 Louisiana gubernatorial election and then in the 1994 Virginia U.S. Senate election. In the former, the ethically challenged, lizardy Edwin Edwards ran against the decency challenged, ur-odious former Grand Dragon of the KKK, David Duke. (You know, the man Trump said he never heard of.) No surprise, Duke was the Republican. That race featured the famous bumper stickers, VOTE FOR THE THIEF-IT’S IMPORTANT.
In the latter race, Democrat Chuck Robb ran for re-election against the belief-in-the-Constitution-challenged, execrable liar, very dangerous Oliver North.
In both of those elections, many Republicans, including elected officials, publicly supported the Democrat, deeming that their loyalty to the United States overrode their party chauvinism. ThankHeaven, the wrong person did not win in both of those contests.
One would hope, wish, pray, that Republicans today would also put nation before party. But as Ms Sneed, writes, it is highly unlikely in today’s uber-polarized climate. Plus Republicans are gutless, craven, small-minded cowards, afraid of the Tea Party, Faux News and anyone with a letterhead and a mailing list or access to a microphone.
If the GOP does not repudiate Trump, loudly and often, they will have lost the fastest growing voting demographic (Hispanics) for at least a generation, and any hope of their party landing the Presidency.
Why does the GOP feel the compelling need to protect America from, well, Americans?
Quote from a Trump supporter on another thread…
"I’m actually cheering him on.
Go, Bernie! Keep dividing that Democratic Party!"
NEVER…you already are seeing party members shrug and say we must stick with the party.
Party First is the mantra, never Nation First.
Goldwater was not as dumb or as overtly racist or sexist as Trump. He served in WW2 instead of in a military academy for misbehaving children of the rich. Goldwater did not have to face the constant media bombardment of his own stupid blathering’s that Trump will have to. I despised Goldwater and was happy to see him go down in defeat, I expect to have the same feelings as Trump falls through the floor in November.
Because they are justifiably more paternalistic and secretive than the democrats? Most of Government’s day to day “business” is trying to hide things from its own citizens. “There Is already a “Third Party” in American “Government.” The"CYA” Party. That’s where the Grumpy Old Party and the democrats really get into “bi-partisan cooperation.”
Pass a budget?
Never happen.
Keep records of Congressional travel expenses secret?
Keep the visitors logs from Blair House under wraps?
You betcha!
If people really knew how much money and resources were spent covering 535 “Backsides” on “the Hill” and even more on Pennsylvania Ave, Congressional and Administration Salaries would be reduced to a roll of dimes once a year over night.
(Say, that’s not a bad idea, is it now?)
That’s why all these mealy mouthed political hacks that get elected by swearing up and down that they will cut “Government waste” mostly get noplace fast. Because they very very quickly discover how much of “The system” is set up for mutual CYA. Naturally, this takes money. Loads of money.
The money which these same political hacks seem to be so fond of saying America does not have.
So Good old Uncle Sam is going to protect all the sweet, Innocent citizens from all that nasty information that might involve people in their government, and at the same time, make sure our elected Oaf-ficals have all the “Privacy” (and unaccounted for public money) they need to “Govern Effectively.”
By the way, If Average citizens reveal any of this, it’s considered theft…from the Government, Naturally.
Some prominent GOP pundits have already rebuked Trump in no uncertain terms. David Brooks, Michael Gerson, and George Will to name a few. There have been others who have said they will not vote for Mrs. Clinton, but they will also not vote for Trump. This campaign is going to get very ugly around October when Trump starts to see the writing on the wall, and it will go downhill fast.
When David Koch says out loud that Hillary might be a better President than any of the Republicans, when Lindsay Graham pretty much agrees with John Boehner that Ted Cruz is Lucifer incarnate yet backs him anyway, when you see that Ted Cruz is endorsed by any Republican officeholder, I’d say you’re also going to see a number of prominent Republicans say that they won’t back Trump in November. They may not endorse Hillary, as some Republicans did with LBJ in 1964, but they’ll make it clear that they’re not going to vote for The Donald.
The GOP won’t disown Trump because that is who they are - ignorant, stupid and bigoted. They have been running as Trump-lite for decades.
They are also cowards. They want a huge military and lots of wars but they have precisely zero intention of fighting in those wars.
You just described the base, not the establishment. The establishment GOP is wringing their collective hands and are very concerned about the future of thei party, and with good reason.
Can someone explain to me why Hillary is always yelling during her speeches? She needs a vocal coach. Her voice is almost as annoying as Ted Cruz’s voice.
The establishment doesn’t think any different from the base, they just know to hide it. They say what Frank Luntz tells them in their message of the day every morning. But they are Trumpists beneath the veneer.
They are also short termists. Trump isn’t planning for November yet and they aren’t planning for 2018 or 2020.
Oh my, we got us a Trumpette here repeating those GOP talking points. If you’re deluded enough to believe what you posted, I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I’ll gladly sell to you!
Yeah, Moe, Larry and Curly are “denouncing” Trump but after the convention they will fall back in line and go back to opening fire on Hillary 24/7!
The Donald’s penchant to offend just about everyone, scream insults, and his household-name celebrity are actually a potentially lethal combination because most voters already have both firm and deeply negative opinions of him, despite the fact that his howler monkey mob of hate&rage devotees will rush out to vote for him. His incendiary, hate filled, and repugnant comments about minorities and the disabled, and proposals to bar all Muslims from entering the United States or to force Mexico to pay for his “US Great Trump Wall” on the southern border, have resounded so widely that half of ALL voters said they would be terrified if he were elected president.
Still, Democrats cannot be lazy in confronting him and his mob. VOTE IN NOVEMBER…and don’t forget two things:
#and especially…
Precisely. Denouncing someone within the context of a primary is one thing, sticking by it once he wins the nomination? That’s a much tougher test.
I like to call myself a Trumper.
