Discussion: Why A Menendez Conviction Would Be A Nightmare For Senate Democrats

Being convicted of a crime really isn’t a problem. People who commit crimes can still be elected. Just ask Greg Gianforte. Just ask Donald T rump.

Duely noted…

If convicted, Dems will need to use Mitch McConnell’s arguments. Scalia died in Feb and they needed to keep the position open to see what the results of the Nov election was. This will be Sept, at the earliest…how can they argue that the Nov election should not determine who replaces Melendez?

Why would Torricelli be the only alternative to Menendez? Certainly there are other Democrats in New Jersey who would want a Senate seat.

The Torch plays dirty. NJ Dems deserve and can do better.

Just slipped his mind, I’m sure - not like he’s arguing dishonestly or anything, can’t be that.

Great points. Justa might be the only “Marine” I’ve come across who would dare term colluding with a hostile foreign adversary and ruthless dictator to overturn the will of the American people a “non-crime.” I mean, there’s even a name for that kind of behavior, giving aid and comfort to the enemy - what is it?

Those two are classic examples of IOKIYAR at work.

Nailed it. I was worried until I read about the 67 votes. Your point about Gorsuch gives them ample cover. Why should a lame-duck governor with a 15% approval rating get to appoint a replacement?

When Dems are faced with such a choice they should just ask themselves, “What would Mitch do if the situation was reversed?” The correct solution of having Menendez remain in the Senate pending appeal would the obvious Mitch move.

Sorry to be the voice of reason. We can not do as the rethugs do, and be pleased with a victory. We must do the right thing.

Menendez is a corrupt public official, and needs to go. To jail.

Let the cards fall where they will. Let them repeal Obamacare. Let them destroy the fragile crust of what remains of a middle class. Then we take that generated fury and enact would should have been done in the first place by responsible representatives - We enact a single payer health system in this country.

Canada has it. Italy has it. Spain has it. Bankrupt Greece has it. Hell, even the country of Iraq has it, FFS. We can afford it - and frankly we must have it.

Many of us on the left threatened to leave the country when the man-baby Trump won the presidential election. Now we are faced with the very real possibility that a hostile foreign power manipulated our most important election to place a morally bankrupt sympathetic minion in the position of the presidency.

Our time has come, true patriots. Do you love this country? Do you want a safe place for your children to grow up in? Do you wish to protect the rights our direct ancestors shed their blood and their lives to defend?
