Discussion: White Privilege Essay Contest Stirs Passions In Upscale Connecticut Town

“It’s an open town,” Reiner said. “There are no barricades here. Nobody says if you’re black or whatever, you can’t move here.”

Yes…and? What the hell does that have to do with the essay contest? These people are afraid to confront an uncomfortable truth. Good on this town for getting the kids used to the idea that a) they aren’t perfect, b) the world is not just nor is it equally unjust to all races, and c) it’s healthy to examine these injustices.

The question wrongly suggests race plays into the good life enjoyed in Westport.

In their defense, I would point out that “the good life enjoyed in Westport” is substantially enhanced by all the Latino and Caribbean gardeners, nannies and other domestic help they happily employ at low wages, and without checking citizenship or paying the required FICA Payroll Taxes.

“We’re very inclusive here,” a long-time resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

The contest , put on by the town’s diversity council, asks students to describe the impact white privilege has had on their lives, using a term that refers generally to advantages conferred automatically to whites, and not to minorities.

I don’t get too upset by the idiotic concept of “white privilege” myself. I have probably enjoyed a little bit of white privilege. But I have benefited a hell of a lot more from “middle class” privilege. But you know who really have a right to get ticked off by accusations of "white privilege - the white working stiffs who have lost their $20 an hour factory job and now are stocking shelves for $10 an hour. You tell them they have “white privilege”, and they vote for Trump.
