Discussion: White House: Trump Will Sign Repeal Of Obama-Era Internet Privacy Rules

I’m waiting for Edward Snowden to chime in on this.

Well… you know what this means?? One of the big takeaway’s is that incognito mode will soon be a distant and useless memory. This is going to bring the data collection and harvesting out of the silicon valley servers (FB, Google, Amz, etc) and into your local or regional ISP. So, you won’t be able to completely hide the fact that you are a closet drudge head junkie in spite of the fact that you only visit there in stealth mode.

But, on the up side, perhaps in 2 to 3 years some researcher will actually be able to demonstrate a correlation between watching foxnews (political porn) and the other stuff.

Those poor cable companies and other isp providers. Job creation (in sales) hahaha nah - why Greed. Swamp.

How quickly Republicans forget… In 1988, their heroest of all heroes, Ronald Reagan, signed the Video Privacy Protection Act making it illegal to sell or publish video rental histories after the publication of Robert Bork’ s video rental history helped tank his Supreme Court candidacy. May many Republicans suffer the same fate with their browsing histories.

I don’t know how a hot take works, but i do know that Nancy Pelosi is a better ‘cat herder’ than ‘the Janesville kid’.

So the GOP has approved selling our internet history to anyone who wants to pay for it at the same time they’re refusing to let anybody take a look at Donald Trump’s taxes.

Wanna know the browsing history of all those reps?

Give hackers about 24 hours to prepare the dump.

It should be epic…

I know(because NVidia) that gaming can be the most demanding usage. Some of my students stream HiDef, no problem. I understand that daytraders use VPNs and they won’t tolerate slow speeds. What I’d suggest is that you read a few provider reviews( like CNet or a competitor), pick a VPN provider with a low one month rate–because even if the intro rate is 4.95 they’ll support you getting started. What I’ve found outside of “our cyber” is that experienced people just write off the small up-front money to save time. Get on there, play your game, if it’s OK switch to yearly after the first month(they prorate anyway)if not you’ll have to investigate whether you need higher speed which might cost more --more CNet reviews, etc. A while ago I read a really good book on Kindle, a personal cybersecurity book that I believe has unicorn in the title. I can’t seem to find it on Amzn because hundreds of books seem to be about unicorns.
I really recommend one or another book. It was a revelation to me and I’m a computer guy. I’m Out of date, but…
The book is Firewalls Don’t Stop Dragons. Before I got it I read a book review that said it could help non-techies and techies alike.

VPN if not perfect is a must item now…

Well, we’re sorry, but it’s the policy…If you force us to make stuff up to fill out your dossier, we’re going to have to charge you for the additional service…

The Senate passed the legislation on Thursday in a party-line vote, 50-48.

Fifty votes passed this bill? Did the Democrats not filibuster it?

Later…

Just sent this to my Congressman, Chris Stewart:

Congressman,

I see that you voted YES on the bill to allow my Internet provider to
sell data related to my browsing history. I’m your constituent;
therefore you ostensibly vote on my behalf.

So I ask you - how do I personally benefit from this? In what way will
my life improve because Comcast, whom I pay, is profiting from the sale
of my browsing data?

I eagerly await his shitty response.

We all know why they decided to do this - people can make money selling this info and they want to undo every single thing Obama ever did. They want to erase his presidency. Their hatred of the black president who was smarter, more well-spoken and more well-liked than any of them is showing big-time in all of their petty little actions, led by the narcissistic bully who makes gossipy high school girls look like statesmen in comparison. It is pathetic and embarrassing but they do not even have the brains to be ashamed of themselves.

I was under the impression it took 60 votes to break a filibuster. I know the Rethugs thwarted former President Obama quite often with filibuster or the threat of a filibuster.

This is a waste of time and I’d like to know where that GoFundMe money goes when they realize they can’t buy individual’s browser histories. App and software developers can already sell your browsing history, but ISP’s are regulated like utilities, this just allows them to do what those software companies have been doing since the internet started.

I’m not defending the bill, I think it’s atrocious, but the time to act on this was before, money grifting stunts like this are what hurt the battle because when those contributing realize they were taken they’re less likely to be engaged in future privacy battles.

They will regret this. I hope. Dammit.

the man — who calls himself a “privacy activist and neutrality advocate” — created a GoFundMe page to purchase the internet history of leading Republicans and Federal Communications Commission members…McElhaney plans on raising 1 million dollars so he can buy the browser history of House Speaker Paul Ryan, Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn, FCC Chairman Ajit Pa and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
If he raises enough money to purchase them, he plans on making their histories searchable on searchinternethistory.com.

To the hackers who’ll get the data?

So what does this bill do exactly? I haven’t read it. Can they say things like: AllieBean went to pornhub this weekend…
