Discussion: White House: Obama Will Continue To Take His Time Responding To ISIS

Discussion for article #227067

Good. We have had enough rush jobs in this realm.

Whether we’re talking about the immigration reform action or the response to ISIS, the chatter about timing it going to disappear as soon as it happens.

On the other hand, actually getting the policies right does matter, both in terms of politics and outcomes.

Fortunately, President Obama seems to know this, and has for a long time. Just remember the 2008 campaign, and his discipline in ignoring the news cycle and sticking to his long-term strategy. Remember “Obama needs to suspend his campaign, like John McCain?” A couple news cycles of Republicans thinking they really had him this time, then it fell out of the public consciousness, and Obama spent that time quietly moving the ball down the field as he had been doing all along.

GWB would have invaded New Zealand by now.

And McCain would be trying to gin up war with China!

I’m not sure what drives the talking heads crazier: That Obama’s so damned reasonable, or that he takes so much time to do stuff! I think that’s behind that FoxSpews bubblehead who was wishing that Putin or Netanyahu would “head this country” for 48 hours and “just get things done!”

Well dammit! Obama is slowing down the news cycle! The talking heads are being reduced to covering outrageous topics like Free Ranging Mutt Pizzles on Local Woman’s Car Tire!

Topics like that aren’t going to sell many color TV sets.

The Sooner family is just fine without the drama. Thanks for being an adult Obama!

No. He should do things fast like GWB.
So we can spend twenty friggen years dealing with the fallout.

Anybody can do reactionary (‘let just do what we’ve always done, that has failed miserably’)…but it takes brains, understanding, grace, integrity and courage, to Respond progressively; especially to these centuries old conflicts, where people act out of habit.

And why do they hate Obama? Because he got things done! ACA, Dodd Frank, DACA, end of DOMA, etc. If they were our mother the talking heads would be called ‘schizophrenogenic’ (make us crazy).

Thank you President Obama. Take your time and make the right decisions. And please take the time to get other countries in the region to take the lead with their blood and treasure. I’m sure you’re building a coalition now, but maybe one of the neighboring countries can lead it.

A huge debate between interventionists and non-interventionists raged inside the United States leading up to WWII. Support for the US entering the war was almost 80% before Pear Harbor made the debate moot. I think FDR dithered for several reasons while bombs were falling on London but one of the reasons was surely that you don’t take a country to war without the support of the people.

“for his comment that the U.S. doesn’t have a strategy yet for combating ISIS”

Why does this article include no quotations around this “comment”? Because these words were never spoken by the POTUS

from Tommy Christopher @ thedailybanter:

Pure garbage TPM.

I bet the ISIS rebels are sitting around their laptops, giggling like a bunch of silly little girls, at the wringing of hands and hysteria of the brave neocons and tough talking politicians. Counting tweets and news mentions of their threats and how everyone knows what is best except our president. What will be confusing them is the fact that Obama isn’t running for his “secret room” a la Cheney screaming “get them, get them, get them”. I bet it isn’t because Obama doesn’t know what to do or is a coward, it is because he doesn’t have any private companies wanting to make billions off of his war. No Halliburton for Obama.

If he had outlined a strategy, it would be the old loose lips sink ships routine from the gasbags.
It is telling watching these idealist warmonger hall of famers trying to outdo a realist.
Let’s look before we leap. We need to conserve as much energy as possible because this is going to get worse before it gets better. No time for blowing it like; well, you know.
They got some bombing, what they want is more bombing, endless bombing.

Thank you Obama administration.

It’s beginning to look like Feinstein stepped in it with this one.

That he doesn’t yet have a strategy against ISIS does not mean Obama isn’t working on it. Jeebus these critics are in a hurry to get into trouble. Too bad they cannot spend that energy doing their damned jobs.

The last time we had a terrorist problem, GWB ignored it until it mushroomed into 9/11. Then he overreacted and invaded Afghanistan and bombed it and its people for six weeks. Then he proceeded to allow Bin Laden to escape at Tora Bora, and I use the term “proceeded” because he and Cheney planned his escape and stood by - and watched Bin Laden slip away into the mountains - in the White House. That allowed them invoke Bin Laden’s name for years afterwards, creating fear in small towns that were never going to suffer a terrorist attack. In fact, Bush and Cheney used Bin Laden as a foil during the 2004 elections and for years afterwards.

Immediately after the Tora Bora debacle, the Bush administration’s focus turned to the invasion of Iraq and the takedown of Saddam. They couldn’t even get that right. Note Abu Ghraib et al. The invasion went awry, and the religious war between the Shia and the Sunni tribes got out of control, and the U.S. ended up spending a billion dollars on Iraq (and still counting) due to poor planning and execution. At no time did McCain object or Mike Rogers object, or any other major player in the Republican party until close to the end of Bush’s second term. But those same individuals what Obama to rush judgment and make the same types of mistakes now that Bush made back then. Why does anyone listen to anything they have to say?

Once questioned as to why Bin Laden hadn’t been captured or killed, Bush responded he didn’t think about him anymore. It took Obama to finally stop Bin Laden from ever planning another catastrophic attack.

So am I upset that Obama is taking his time and consulting many people and entities and governments before going full tilt boogey on ISIS/ISIL? No, I’m grateful that he takes plans to get the strategy right. I’ll bet on his judgment over McCain’s and Rogers’ judgment any day. His track record is way better.

Seems like whenever Obama “doesn’t have a strategy” someone’s on a slab with a bullet in his melon a few weeks/months later. ISIS is too busy killing and terrorizing people in their own backyard (which is why they’re not coming over here – the commute is a BITCH), so they won’t care whether Obama has a strategy or not… until it’s too late, and their leader doesn’t hear the AM in “BLAM!”
