Discussion for article #246110
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday that President Barack Obama doesn’t plan to attend the funeral for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
Conservative heads exploding in 3…2…1…
He’s being too generous to the man who tried to stop everything he’s done or tried to do to help the country. Being presidential can go just so far.
There goes that damned Barry Bamz again, proving once more that he is not a hypocrite by choosing to not attend a funeral for someone he disagreed with and battled with constantly, and who treated him and his beliefs like shit. Who the hell does he think he is - President of the United States or something?!
I just adore the way President “Fresh outta Fucks” Obama has handled Scalia’s death. He’s been just sufficiently respectful, he’s used mostly neutral adjectives, and he’s done so while refusing to disingenuously conceal his somewhat obvious contempt. I applaud the president for refusing to attend the funeral of such a vile individual.
Plus the double-reverse dig about how the GOP Senate reads things in the Constitution that just are not there. Wonder where they learned that trick of originalism?
President Obama isn’t going to attend the funeral? This must conclusively prove…something, and the Republicans will have a field day.
Scalia didn’t come to the last couple State of the Union speeches.
I’d go golfing, and I hate golf.
I refused to attend his funeral, but I wrote a very nice letter explaining that I approved of it.
— attributed, possibly erroneously, to Mark Twain
Picture of the Republican Party’s heads after getting the news, too bad it didn’t really happen like this!
Twain is one of the worst victims of false attributions and garbled quotes, and it’s a huge pet peeve of mine because I’ve loved his work all my life and he was a huge figure in Realism and in creating literature that reflected the world it grew out of accurately and honestly. Rant over—maybe the first time he ever spoke approvingly of a funeral was in Roughing It, after finding out he’d been tricked:
“I made up my mind that if the auctioneer’s brother’s funeral took place while I was in the Territory I would postpone all other recreations and attend it.”
President Obama’s final State of the Union address on Tuesday night.
"Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Antonin Scalia were not present in the House chamber as the rest of their colleagues filed in.
The trio also skipped the president’s address last year and Scalia has missed the State of the Union more than a dozen times. In 2013, Scalia called the event “a childish spectacle.”
Background on the comment.

I only wish he was able to use that famous quote by Clarence Darrow: “I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure.”
President “Fresh outta Fucks” Obama.
I’m stealing this.
Scalia’s family is probably going to keep the location of the grave a secret. Otherwise, no grass will grow on it due to all of the people who will stop by to pee on it.
I suspect he doesn’t want to be the center of attention, either, and then have the wingnuts go after him for “politicizing” the funeral. I always appreciate that he takes the high road. As my mom used to say, “always be the bigger person.”
It won’t matter whether he does or he doesn’t attend the funeral, the Right will find a reason to take Obama to task for it.
He will pay his respects privately and go on with his administration, which will truly tick off the Conservatives.
Unlike Scalia, who has pretty much reached his last stand.
Cruz: What a chicken Obama is? Obviously he murdered him.
I don’t think this is politically motivated – but out of respect for Scalia’s family. His presence would require a huge security detail – and would draw attention away from their mourning of their loved one.
