Donât care much for Jim Webb but he would be more qualified then most Dump picksâŚ
Ivanka declined?
His views on aggression toward China and pulling American troops from the Middle East align with President Donald Trumpâs.

I donât know much about Jim Webb other than heâs reponsible for the post 9/11 GI Bill which was and is an amazing piece of legislation for veterans.
I wonder: Is Webb feeling particularly suicidal lately?
If he has any sense he will let Toadglans twist in the wind, so desperate is he to appoint anyone who has a remote chance of being confirmed.
But does Jim Webb mull assuming the position?
It used to be a matter of honor to serve your president when called upon to do so. Not any more. Anybody who willing works for this monstrosity of an âAdministrationâ has to lack at least one of the following:
- Conscience
- Dignity
- Intelligence
- Self-respect
- Scruples
Some people, like Steve Mnuchin, Ryan Zinke or Scott Pruitt lack all five. Which one will Jim Webb demonstrate he lacks if he takes on this suicide mission?
Anyone who accepts a cabinet-level position in the current maladministration does so exclusively-OR for the following reasons:
- They are out of their fucking mind.
- They do so in the hope of convincing other cabinet officers to impose the 25th amendment.
I should imagine Webb is at least considering it, unless the denial that heâs even been asked hits the presses in the next hour or so.
Something like this, to my mind (and in a normal admin, which this is not), wouldnât be stated unless consideration was being made by both sides.
But I do agree with @georgemilquetoast, above,
Trump today:
âJim Webb is a tremendously talented candidate, a true patriot, and a brilliant choice for SoD.â
Six months from now:
âJim Webb is an idiot, a horrible person, and a complete disaster. Oh, and he didnât quit â I fired him!â
Jim Webb had some moments back when he was a senator, but his never-really-surpressed White small-n nationalist crap has reemerged in the Trump era. Heâs back on the R side of the aisle, because he likes the look of Tâs Repub party. Honestly, though, what sane, reasonable person would take this job right now? I mean, maybe Webb would be better than many, but heâs gotta do Tâs bidding or heâll be shown the door.
My main memory of Webb was the temper tantrum he threw at the '16 Dem debate. I wasnât a fan after that but I wonât slag the guy nowâŚunless of course he willingly allows himself to be sucked into the dignity hole of this administration.
Iâm just not seeing the upside here for Webb. âEverything Trump Touches Dies,â he never listens to his advisors, he undercuts them with a tweet, and Webb will almost certainly be out in under a year. Where is the âwinâ for him that would make this a compelling offer, assuming that Trump does indeed offer?
Jim Webb, Six months and five minutes from now: âI once choked the life out of a Viet Cong with my own bare hands and watched him die.â
Webb might take this if he sees it as his duty to try to rein in Trumpâs bad behavior, at least as far as military endeavors go. I think thatâs why Mattis stayed so long, because he thought he could manage itâŚeventually he learned that he couldnât stop the really big mistakes so he gave up, but in a way that made a point to the military that Trump is dangerous and they need to remember they serve the nation and not him.
Weâd be lucky to get another Mattis who can keep a cork on Trump, at least mostlyâŚWebb might be a candidate for that at least, and he has demonstrated that he cares personally for the troops and veterans. Maybe thatâs enough, at least until things get really crazy later this year.
Mattis kept a cork on Trump? MmmâŚokay.
Makes sense. He killed a guy, remember? That definitely got Trumpâs attention.
we didnât nuke anyone or invade any other countries.
the bar is pretty low, I know.
Sorry, I forget for a moment who we were talking about. Youâre completely correct.

I expect him to do a âSantorumâ (go on Burnett and decline the offer).
