I wager that since Duke is a private university with a $60,000 tuition, that the students of black parents are probabaly middle to upper middle class, and would be savvy enough to name their children with ātraditionalā sound names. Shanika and other āstrangeā sounding names are more prevalent in the black lower class than the black middle class.
That he gave no examples makes me think that his citicism isnāt based on any real facts-- heās a political scientistāmake think that his statement is based on animus.
If only Hough had ventured an explanation of chitlins. Louis CK would have to hide in shame at the exposure of his own comic lameness.
What an astonishing stain both on the discipline of political science and upon a great (if unbearably smug and elitist in the worst possible sense of the word) university this man is. He holds an endowed chair. A man who holds views representative of the most asinine, facile, insular form of Fox News rich white conservative racism has an endowed chair at Duke. Not an adjunct. Not an untenured associate professor. Not even a junior full professor. No, a full professor holding an endowed chair.
The manās been in the highest strata of academe for decades and, in all that time, heās managed to absorb nothing from those whose views differ from his. Heās walled himself off and gotten not so much as a glimpse out the window of the castle of white privilege he lives in. No understanding or acknowledgement of the existence of structural racism, just the self-satisfied purblind conservative white privilege that believes the reason black people have so many problems is because of the stubborn, possibly genetic, refusal of Those People to assimilate with white people, despite the manifest, and quite generous, willingness of white people to allow that to happen.
Itās just jaw dropping. Not as jaw dropping as giving a war criminal a professorship at Boalt Hall, but close.
