Discussion: #WheresMitch: McConnell Disappears Into The Background Of Shutdown

“What is McConnell — or anyone else — going to tell Trump? Hey man, give up on the wall? That’s crazy.”

Pass the funding bills with a veto-proof majority.

McConnell said the “solution to the problem” is for the president, who he reminds is the only one who can sign a bill into law, to reach an agreement with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. “There’s no way around that,” he told reporters this week.

This legislative mastermind has apparently “forgotten” that Congress can override a presidential veto.

Jennings said rather than being seen as weak leader, the opposite is true: McConnell is showing strength by protecting Republicans from taking votes on bills that put them or the president on the spot as they try to force Democrats’ hand.
Strong leader = Republican Party and Ideals
Weak leader = Senate Majority Leader

I guess it depends on whether you’re looking at the best interests of the country or the Republican Party.

Newt Gingrich, in an interview on NPR, stated that the shut down was fine because most federal workers are Democrats. Yep, you heard that right. To these jerks, it’s not about “we the people” or representative democracy. It’s about hurting people who are “different.”

Also block and ignore a President as they see fit.
See:
November 2008 . “We intend to make Barack Obama a one term president and will block everything he attempts.”
also:
Garland, Merrick

The Courier Journal published an op-ed by Mitch yesterday where he blames the Dems for the shut down. Checked the comment section and no one was buying it except for one Magat guy who only barfed out stupid name calling.

As for mayor Watson of Owensboro (Johnny Depp’s hometown) he’s seems pure idiot. The Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro is about the only redeemable attribute save perhaps some good BBQ. It’s a scrappy redneck town also home to a famous NASCAR driver, Darrell Waltrip and his son Michael, who also races. trump country to be sure.

“#WheresMitch?” I just assumed he’s been recalled to Moscow.

Except not even that is true. Plenty of people in blue states as well as red states are being affected all across the country. He’s spouting the tRumpian lie that most of the people are Dems being affected that live in and around the DC area too, so why should anyone in his party care about this shutdown.

I read last night that 21% of people who were polled recently said they were being directly affected by the shutdown. That’s 1 out of 5 people already…and that number will only go up and get worse as time goes on. Also, something like 46% know someone indirectly through friends, family members, neighbors or acquaintances, that had already been affected. I can’t see all those people being Democrats no matter how much Gingrich tries to spin this stuff. Reality bites back, Newt.

But that’s always been his number one job, even when he was a failed Speaker of the House…He did nothing but political spin 24/7 (better known as major BS) until he was turfed out of his job as Speaker by his own party following his poor leadership for behavior unbecoming a member of Congress, and losing seats following his singular obsession with trying to impeach Bill Clinton. He soon after announced his resignation from Congress. So Fuck Newt.

Once a bullshitter, always a bullshitter.

He is busy changing the rules so that he can get The Dumpster’s bigoted/racist picks thru before he is forced to resign. Those picks will last at least a generation and will eventually do much much more damage to the Nation than tRUmp ever could. What a legacy to build for both of them.

Another lesson in how to craft a perfect news story from {AP} Masterclass

“Democrats complain publicly — and some Republicans grumble privately — that the Senate is not fulfilling its role as a co-equal branch of government, a legislative check on the executive. They worry about ordinary Americans facing hardship waiting for a resolution to the standoff over Trump’s demand for money to build the border wall with Mexico.”
BALANCE: We have mentioned there are 2 parties in the government, both of whom are similar

“Yet the leader, who was required to sit still as a child battling polio, is nothing if not a patient person. And so he waits.”
PATHOS: Bring up childhood illness, not dereliction of duties during Obama presidency

“Senator McConnell,” said Watson, “I believe, is doing exactly what the Senate is supposed to do.”
CLOSING: End your article with affirmation of the goodness and skill of your subject despite evidence to the contrary, or statement or statistic that is tangential to the body of the pices

I’ve been wondering what the Great Strategist McConnell’s game is lately. As far as I can tell, he has all his chips riding on the idea that if the shutdown lasts long enough, and enough people are hurt, the blame will shift more towards the Dems instead of where the polling is now. He’s thinking the Dems will crack at that point, and they’ll fund the wall in exchange for some minor consolation prize.

I don’t think he has a backup plan if that doesn’t happen. And so far, it isn’t happening. This could go on for months, with frantic messaging to try and shift the polling numbers.

As I and others have posted elsewhere, McTurtle is between a rock and a hard place, largely because of his KY voting base, and likely also because he’s got his own kompromat to hide. Not to mention a Taiwanese spy for a wife in DJT’s cabinet.

Yep. See my post just above

This is a great spin piece for McConnell. He has a great PR team.

And AP is happy to go along. :imp:

Who really expects McConnell to do anything?

He needs the Trump supporters - the proudly deplorable, the defiantly ignorant, the actively stupid – to support his re-election.

Don’t hold innocent Americans hostage?

"Hey man, give up on the wall? That’s crazy.”

No, the wall is what’s crazy. And stupid. Like the Combover in Chief.

Charlie Pierce has a piece up on his perch at Esquire titled: There Is No More Loathsome Creature Walking Our Political Landscape Than Mitch McConnell

I couldn’t agree more. He is worse than Trump IMO.
