For the FBI’s counterintelligence division not to have initiated an investigation on Donald Trump, especially after the Comey firing and Lavrov/Kisliak Oval Office meeting, would have been National Security malpractice of the highest order. Because Trump has put the lives and livelihood of every American at risk by becoming a Russian asset.
Any Republican who plants his flag behind Trump is either compromised as well or is an incredible fool. Either way, unfit for any office in American politics.

Let us not forget the unstinting help they’re getting from the US Senate, and formerly the US House. Why were (and still are) our Senate & House helping the President in his openly destructive-to-the-USA actions? Are the destructive actions Trump has taken also conducive to profit for the Kochs, Mercers, Oil corporations & other American Oligarchs?
What surprises me is the FBI’s claimed dawdling over even opening an investigation, when there was a plethora of evidence long before the election that Trump was Putin’s guy.
But the FBI loathed Hillary Clinton. Good job, guys.
Most likely because they were struggling with the fact that our whole system is built around the basic assumption that, whatever else he may be, the President is an American through and through. Thus the requirements to be born a citizen, not naturalized, etc.
So when the whole goal of a mole hunt is to report that back up the chain of command until it reaches the very top guy…
This “Russia thing”, as Trump puts it, is going to command the front page for quite some time. Which unfortunately probably means the shutdown goes on, at least until Trump can find another diversionary tactic.
In the short term, probably yes. In the long term, as Trump’s, Putin’s, and the Repuglikan’s actions tear asunder the very fabric of American culture and society, the result will be anarchy and chaos. Not sure that will profit anyone except Putin and his oligarchs.

You sound kinda down about things. Here’s maybe a different perspective, if it helps:
Western Europe and America had largely grown complacent after the collapse of the USSR. There was a rise of “meh” and “both sides are the same”.
Brexit and Trump snapped us all out of it, made it clear that there ARE differences, fundamental ones about how we live our lives and how our future will look, between the parties, and that there is still a real threat out there from adversaries.
This is our (and Britain’s) chance to test our institutions, identify a LOT of small issues with them (emergency powers, anyone?) that have cropped up over time through the best of intentions, fix those, and have a re-energized future, while keeping a close eye on our adversaries.
Don’t forget that we have the stupid rule that the FBI, CIA and NSA can’t share notes.
