Discussion for article #227636
Would it be that bad? How would it be any different than it is now? Congress passes nothing now, and it would pass nothing later.
The only important thing is getting a Supreme Court nominee through, and I don’t expect there to be one.
We say that those right wingers who watch Fox are the most uninformed people in this country, and yet as a Dem, I read this and am appalled at how incredibly stupid so many Dems are. If you do not even know who is in control of the Senate right now, then you are a complete idiot. We can not blame right wing BS propaganda and right wing voters for the mess this country is in, when we have so many in our own party who are this incredibly brain dead.
I am sure that most of these people they talked to are those that constantly complain about what a mess this country is, and how their concerns are never addressed. Talk about willful ignorance, which there is no excuse for in this information age.
Become a leader for these people. Contact a Democratic campaign and see how you can help contact folks. It takes a door-to-door effort.
This article is full of feces! Note what it says “some of those voters don’t see the election in those terms.”
It says “some,” that’s a very small amount of those who vote. Democratic voters can be just as uninformed as GOP voters. You have to be willing to educate yourself on the issues. Not everybody is a political junkie. However, I still think Democratic voters are better informed than Republican voters.
I find this article appalling. As we get closer to November, I see more articles downplaying Democratic turnout. That there should tell you something, as nobody is downplaying GOP turnout.
I have been canvassing, GOTV, and from what I hear, Dems are voting. Just so you know, KY is a red state because Dems don’t vote. They’re voting this year.
I sure hope so, but Alison is not doing well in the polls lately. In fact her campaign seems have lost some direction.
How bad? Imagine a veto-proof Senate working in tandem with the already insane House. Now imagine everything the Republicans hate being legislated or defunded out of existence. EPA…gone. ACA…gone. Medicaid…gone. SNAP…gone. CFPB…gone.
Oh…and then there’s that crowd in both chambers who are serious about impeachment.
It can be really, really, bad.
It seems a little too late in the election cycle to point to targeting/education as a means of really juicing GOTV. This could be useful in future years, but right now it seems like it can best make an influence in 1 on 1 conversations (effective but laborious and not scalable GOTV) or by existing organizational pushes like the New Georgia Project.
The gop in control of anything is nothing good for the working class in America. There is nothing they do for the middle class except make things worse. They are a scourge on America.
Your an informed voter, yet you don’t know what the Senate does? How many of the Presidents Judicial and Government Agency appointments will be delayed or simply voted down? What about budgets and taxes. Believe me the GOP will attach horrible amendments to must have bills (i.e. agency funding, etc) that will force Obama to either Veto it or negotiate away things like SS.
Small things , LIKE LOSS OF TRUE DEMOCRACY and THE NEXT APPOINTMENTS TO THE SUPREME COURT…GOTV DEMOCRAT!
If the GOP gets control of the Senate, it’ll only be by a few votes. Even assuming they completely trash the filibuster, there won’t be anything even close to enough votes to override vetoes. Same with impeachment.
I’m not saying that a Republican Senate wouldn’t be bad, but let’s not overdo it.
Never willingly cede authority.
Ah yes! People so willingly under informed will just wait until 2016 and elect HRC who will make everything all better with just one wave of her magic wand.
I get questions all the time from people in Israel who want to know (Honest) how ignorant Americans can be.
This little piece of political news is just another fine example of how truly deep that ignorance runs, and how swiftly it flows.
Really? Why’s that? RBG is in her 80’s and a pancreatic cancer survivor. Scalia and Kennedy are both in their late 70’s. There’s a high probability of an opening before 2016. Not to mention all the other judicial appointments, which are equally important and would grind completely to a halt.
Honestly, maxi’s lack of a sense of urgency is practically sock-puppetry.
Um, being in control of the agenda would be a disaster. But, let’s put more pressure on the President, maybe we can completely do ourselves in. I’m guessing you don’t like Harry; just consider Mitch calling the shots because come hell or high water he’ll be back next congress to pursue his win at all costs goals. He couldn’t care less about you and me.
Ginsburg has said repeatedly that she has no intentions of resigning while Obama is in the White House. And while all three you mention are indeed getting up there in age, none have any serious ongoing health concerns I am aware of looming over them.
If Ginsburg doesn’t retire, its doubtful that Obama gets another chance at the SCOTUS. And if she was going to retire, this is the year to do so, not next. Look for her to be replaced by the next POTUS,and probably not in their first term.
The GOP is going to play around with government shutdown regardless of whether or not they take the Senate. They just get considerably more strength behind their demands if they do control both the House and the Senate.
In one perspective, Reid and the Senate have been a block for Obama, letting him more or less ignore a lot of the nonsense that bubbles up from the House, but they haven’t been particularly engaged in moving any legislation forward since his re election in 2012. Even the Immigration Reform package that is dying (dead?) in the House was a republican agenda item. Dems sat back and let republicans do the heavy lifting…only to watch it come crashing down as everyone expected once it hit the House.
If they take back the Senate, Obama spends his last two years in bunker mode, turning his attention more towards international events (probably going to happen either way now) and stamping VETO on anything that comes out of Congress. Yes, they will try to force his hand by withholding funding, but keep in mind, they will only be in control for two years. They have a ton of seats to protect in 2016,and will most assuredly become the minority party again…by a very large margin.
What If Voters Don’t Care Who Controls The Senate Next Year?
Take it to the bank, you can, care they will.
