Discussion: WH Spox: I Won't Assess Biden's Body Language For Signs Of Prez Bid (VIDEO)

Discussion for article #241915

You donā€™t see democrats clamoring for VP Biden to run for POTUS. I think that VP Biden is a good VP, but his time has passed.

I love the guy. But heā€™s 72. And he polled in the single digits last time. And he has lots of ā€˜the sameā€™ as Hillary. But he doesnā€™t have the endorsements or the $ or the infrastructure that Hillary has already assembled. And late comers tend to fizzle out soon after arriving. And an 8 year commitment makes him an old guy in his second term.

ā€œThere is no denying that Vice President Biden is somebody who brings a lot of energy to his current job. "

Well then he canā€™t be on the Republican ticket.

Obviously the White House would rather not have to chose between their former SoS and current VP, but itā€™s hard for me to see their comments about Joe Bidenā€™s Presidential Ambition as anything other than the bare minimum you could be required to say to be polite. You canā€™t say your VP did a bad job, because that just means you made a bad choice as President (and arguably one of the most important choices you can make is picking your VP). I donā€™t read that as negative feedback about Joe as a person, but definitely supports the idea that Clinton is seen as the best political bet for the Democrats within the White House.

Earnestā€™s performances suggest the potential for synergies between the daily White House press corp briefings and daily reports from ā€œcorrespondentsā€ on The Daily Show.

Josh Earnest and Jordan Klepper could switch jobs periodically. Each would stay fresher and maybe even grow within his regular role, there could be a just redistribution of compensation packages, it could result in each of their careers being extended, both shows would benefit, and thereā€™s really no basis for thinking the public would be served less well, or even much notice any difference.

Coincidentally, literally just now saw this tweet.

(*although, weā€™ve seen so many ā€œgood source[s]ā€ about this).

Hang on: since itā€™s mostly Republicans hot for him to run, why not run for the GOP nod?

Comā€™on, Joe: you could lap the field in that Clown Car race!

Looks like another ā€œtrial balloon.ā€

About the only justification I can see for Biden getting in the race is his stronger-than-Hillary showings against various Republicans in hypothetical head-to-head matchups:

But there are two big problems with reading any real meaning into these polls: (1) Polls at this early point have no real predictive power as to what would actually happen in November 2016, and (2) These are his numbers before anyone has started attacking him.

By the way, given that Bernieā€™s chances of winning the nomination, while slim, are still probably quite a bit better than Bidenā€™s (not to mention Bernieā€™s an actual candidate, and actually leading in some early state polls) itā€™s annoying that most of the pollsters arenā€™t even bothering to look at how Bernie might fare against any Republicans other than Trump and Bush. That might be more understandable if he was getting trounced by Trump and Bush in the polls that do ask the question ā€“ but thatā€™s not the case. Todayā€™s CNNC/ORC poll shows him beating Trump by 9 points, and other polls show him beating or tied with Bush. But apparently none of the pollsters are looking at how Bernie would fare against Carson, Fiorina, Rubio, etc ā€“ even though most of the pollsters are looking at how Biden would fare against all of those, and others.

The real message is where the OfA people have all gone, and none of them have signed up for this faux Biden campaign. And they never did, even back in the early months of the year.

As you correctly state, the President is not going to weigh in on a choice between his VP and his SoS. But which way his campaign staff goes says volumes. And the ones working on Presidential campaigns, are signed on with Hillary.

Exactly. Itā€™s the media and the right-wingers who are clamoring for Joe since if he runs he gives them more to spew about Hilary. Chuck Todd must be foaming at the mouth already.

My thought was much the same. Throughout most of this cycle thus far, few people have seriously considered him to be their obvious (or ā€œinevitableā€ if you will) choice. For a sitting VP, that speaks volumes. In fact, there wasnā€™t much of this Biden talk until this stupid email thing blows out of proportion.

Balloons are tiring, to be honest.

Well, except these guys:

But basically, yeah, no oneā€™s really clamoring for Biden to get into the race, except the press. And political junkies, I suppose, as Bidenā€™s entry might well make for a more ā€œinterestingā€ Democratic race. But as far as some grassroots outcry for Uncle Joe to come save the dayā€¦Iā€™m just not seeing any sign of that. And if thatā€™s what heā€™s been waiting for ā€“ some sign of an authentic groundswell of support for the ā€œDraft Bidenā€ movement ā€“ then no wonder heā€™s been stalling, because it just hasnā€™t been happening.

Donā€™t underestimate Obamaā€™s influence in the decision. Surely it seems he and Biden have developed a strong friendship and trust ā€“ and if Obama gives him his blessing then its a go. If Obama doesnā€™t see how it would be a successful endeavor, then heā€™d advise his friend not to run. I do not think Biden would run without Obama giving him support behind the scenes. If he jumps into the race, I expect the poll numbers will shift. I am sure there are a lot of democrats who remain reticent about Hillary Clinton and are worried that a Sanderā€™s nomination is a losing ticket.

I hear that a lot from people here ā€“ but I donā€™t think its republicans who are urging him. Its disaffected democrats who do not like Clinton and fear both she and Sanders would lose the general.

Of course you donā€™t see Hillary supporters such as yourself clamoring for a Biden run. They are worried he will syphon votes from her. I think Biden would actually attract some voters away from Bernie too. There are democrats that are only looking at Sanders because they do not trust Clinton. Heā€™s the only one besides her currently that is getting anywhere so far ā€“ but heā€™s a general election disaster in the making.

Believe it or not, some of us believe Hillaryā€™s time has also passed. I know, hard for some to believe, but true.
