It becomes this. When the WH refused the Watergate Tape subpoena, it took (literally) a year and a day from the subpoena to the Supreme Court ruling.

Document subpoenas will move through the courts, and the WH can’t stonewall that process except through executive privilege.

I think that Dems get even more advantage by taking this route as opposed to immediately going onto impeachment proceedings. We stay out of a possible bear trap but still get the effect of what we are looking to accomplish anyway.
