The Ambassadorship continued to hold this status through the Ford, Carter, and Reagan administrations but was removed from cabinet rank by George H. W. Bush, who had previously held the position himself. It was restored under the Clinton administration. It was not a cabinet-level position under the George W. Bush administration (from 2001 to 2009), but was once again elevated under the Obama administration, and retained as such by the Trump administration
Maybe the American public should downgrade the current occupant of the WH to an unelected position.

For my money the best UN Ambassador we ever had was Adlai Stevenson II during the JFK administration, which of course puts me in the old category. He was the one who said
“If the Republicans will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.”
Oh, my, I had forgotten that one. And so perfect for so many moments over the past 60 years.
That might work for the women who already like him (those of the “you can grab me here” T-shirt club) and even the stuffy Republiwives (those who will go along with whatever their husbands tell them to even though he’s a bit too crass for their tastes).
It isn’t going to improve his status with any of the women with a brain.
