Discussion: WH Argues President Has 'Broad Discretion' To Block Reporters, Including Acosta

One or more of these:

They all are, but they will never admit it.

It feels like they are grasping at straws in their legal challenge. So the precedent set in earlier decisions doesn’t apply because that was the Secret Service barring access to the White House while this is the White House barring access to the White House? It’s still access and it’s still the First Amendment.

Another sign of how weak Trump is. This is a loser for him, yet he is unable to resist the chance of hurting an enemy while elevating himself. I think Trumps time as a “winner” is over, he is going to keep taking on the stench of irrelevance.

“[T]he decision to provide a journalist a White House hard pass takes place at the intersection of two realms the First Amendment does not reach: access to the White House, and White House interactions with particular journalists,” Justice Department lawyers wrote in a filing Wednesday. “And where, as here, the White House has determined that it wants to scale back its interactions with a particular journalist, denying that journalist a hard pass is a permissible way to accomplish that goal.”

Has The Daily Caller or RT chimed in yet?

Yes, and I just don’t think there are that many Forever Trumpers among the elite circles of the GOP. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to discover that those in the upper echelons of the GOP have worse things to say about him than we do, but too many on our side confuse Trumpism with opinions and beliefs that are longstanding tenets of Conservative ideology. A judge who’d vote to gut the VRA would do so under Rubio, under Clinton, under Obama, and, of course, under Trump. That doesn’t mean they are a Trumper or someone who wants to see him made President for Life. When PP loses in 2020, one of the things I’d bet my very last dollar on is that you’ll suddenly see a flood of GOPers announcing what they really thought of PP and it won’t be anywhere near kind.

DJT’s biggest fear is embarrassment of walking into an empty room of reporters while camera lights show brightly on anyone else. In DJT’s mind RATINGS = WINNERS.

If the press ever did a simple walkout in solidarity, just once, I think we’d see an epic event that would probably bring the 25th Amendment front and center.

Reporters need to band together and fight the fascist bastards in the WH. Great that CNN is bringing a lawsuit agains the WH. But in the press briefings themselves, reporters need to be cohesive and attack the fascist bastards. And be prepared to walk out. Have some self-respect. Do not kowtow to lying bastards who merit no deference whatsoever.

I agree. They should stand together and quit thinking it’s every reporter for him or herself.

Of course the WH is going to double down, that’s the only move Trump has, in every occasion. The press needs to begin getting Republican members of Congress on the record over this so we citizens can begin holding them accountable for Trump’s actions. Maybe then the WH will feel some pressure, because they surely don’t feel any pressure from the press corpse (<-- on purpose).

In times long past, a judge appointed to SCOTUS often did become more “judicial”. That hasn’t been the case since the reign of Bush II. And at the circuit and appellate level, much the same is true. Thanks to the Federalist Society’s very careful vetting. Ideological fealty is now the chief qualification for appointment.

Charts like this are great as they show how good this year was. This was NOT a year like 2006 when the D’s got a nearly 8% margin in the house because republicans stayed home (Bush was at about 37% approval, and republican voters were really tuned out) it was a year when the republicans came out and voted for their little hater in chief. It was nationalized - on both sides - like no other congressional election has been in years.

Yet, the D’s are likely (if you look at turn out of the young, latinos, single women to do much better in a presidential year.

For example, in 2016 - not a good year for the D’s - the key voting groups of 18-39 (which skew heavily Democratic) was about 30% of the electorate, it was more like 28% this year (which in turn is 3% higher than in 2014) See data here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/11/13/demographic-surges-that-spurred-s-heavy-turnout/?utm_term=.21c84ab7e744

I think if there was a presidential race to drive turn-out that the D’s would have won by 10-11%, not the 8% margin they look like they will win. This is a real ass kicking, and anyone who thinks Trump is not in really trouble in 2020 is a fool.

We need to spend 2 years (a) exposing Trumps corruption, (b) registering voters and preparing for 2020, and © working to fix the voting system. but if we do, the wave in 2020 will be yet higher.

MSNBC did the same. During the campaign they started the day at 6am with Morning Joe and an almost daily call-in interview from Agent Orange, and then featured that interview as ”breaking news” for the rest of the day. Without the “fake news”, there would be no Agent Orange.

And who else in the Washington Press Corpse would walk out on Hucky Boo Boo?

None.

trump announces some criminal justice reforms while surrounded by African Americans
 hmmm
Very odd optics.
I watched the announcement with the sound off because otherwise I would destroy my TV upon hearing trump’s voice

This may be what they had in mind:

I didn’t say anything about walking out.

The White House is not very good at its job right now

Spot on the point, I think. It is very likely that, for as long as he’s occupied the office, the establishment republicans supporting Trump have simply been on board to get what advantages they can for as long as they can before they disown him. One wonders if Trump understands how isolated and loathed he will be after leaving office.
