Discussion: Wealthy Environmentalist Tom Steyer To Make Big 'Announcement' In Iowa

I’m so sick of this idea that we need a business leader to run the government, as if it would be appropriate to run the government like a business. Government provides services that business can’t, and is rightly based on entirely different financial principles, among which is the need to counterbalance the boom/bust cycles that the business world inevitably seems to produce.

Steyer or Bloomberg might be exceptions to the above but I agree they should use their money to support others who have more experience in governing. Prior to the current jackass we have in the White House, the last businessman-President we elected was H.H. in 1928 and you probably recall how that worked out.

I first misread that as the “businessman with no experience” as president punishment.

sigh. Can’t we judge the candidates based on their thoughts, opinions, plans, vision? I don’t care if the best candidate is black, white, purple, blue, female, male, transgender, whatever. Wish the media would stop focusing on physical attributes and focus on what really matters about them.

I see no value whatsoever in establishing the Dems/liberal movement as the “fuck you, white men” party in 2020. The GOP and MSM will have a field day with it. But hey, if that’s what it takes to establish one’s “progessive” bona fides at this point, then by all means, step in it.

That being said, Steyer is a no for me. Being a gazillionaire who donates and is politically active isn’t the same as having been in the trenches. Not interested. Run for House or something, Tom.

I’m flexible. Lets (whispers) compromise. Better make in a secret location though, since that’s been rendered an unsavory word nowadays. Kind of like motherfucker.

But his groups have millions of supporters on their email lists, and he’s been one of the earliest and most vocal supporters of impeaching Trump. He’s likely to be a factor in the race if he runs.

It’s nice to know that there are a few billionaires on the Dems’ side, but, honestly, this guy doesn’t have a fucking clue. He spends a shitload of money advocating for Trump’s impeachment, which is NEVER going to happen in a million years, when he could have used that money for better purposes. He now could be paying for ads screaming about Trumps stupid border wall fantasy and the government shutdown and tying McConnell and the entire GOP to that political anchor, but instead he is probably going to make an announcement about running for Prez in 2020. The guy is a pre-ordained losing candidate. He has the personality of a jar of Hellman’s mayonnaise. No wait - I take that back. He has the personality of a jar of generic mayonnaise. He’s another rich guy who thinks that just because he has a lot of money it makes him Presidential timber. Sorry, Tom, but we already have someone like that in the White House right now.

Agreed. I like Tom Steyer. Hell, I like just about anyone who is in the fight and spending long cash to get rid of this mother fucker in the WH. I appreciate the money he’s spending to get Dems elected and to call for action on Climate Change, so I think it’s fairly stupid to trash him. But he’s not going to win the nomination and he’d get more bang for his buck if he’d invest his money into helping more Democrats get elected instead of a failed presidential bid.

I’d totally support that.

Oh there is a value to that… a negative one.

That said a younger, browner, more female reflection of our base is appropriate on our ticket. Especially as our congressional leadership does not reflect this…

Well, we can.

Steyer’s probably best known for his climate change advocacy, yet he’s been hoodwinked into the camp of “Let’s just build jillions of wind turbines and solar panels and we’ll have free energy forever.” His knowledge of the critical area of energy generation that is at the core of effective climate action is ideological, not data-based. In terms of climate action that will actually help solve the problem, he would be a horrible leader and we’d lose years of effective action that we can’t afford to lose, while following someone who fancies himself to be a climate leader. More like the Pied Piper.

I don’t know what that means. Anyone qualified is appropriate on our ticket.

But hey, if we want to chase all the white men in the country back to Trump again, let’s do that! Sounds like perfect strategery.

I can’t speak for all democrats, but I have formed an exploratory committee with my cats, Remus and Phoebe, to look into the feasbility of cashing in on some of that PAC money that’s floating around…

Yet those are the same reasons Bernie Sanders and his acolyte AOC are so popular! Imagine!

It’s also unclear…whether an older white male is what many base voters will be looking for.

The short answer is “no.” And the last thing the country needs is another “businessman” running for political office.

That works too.

If being rich qualifies someone for president, then Trump and his acolytes would have to agree that what the US needs is Jeff Bezos as president.

Steyer has a ton of money, and is willing to spend it. Why doesn’t he recognize the most bang for your buck is to buy politicians? When one of them gets busted for it and the details leak out, I’m always amazed at how little it takes to buy one.
