Discussion: WATCH: The 'Daily Show' Showdown Between Native Americans And Redskins Fans

Discussion for article #228111

For all the hype the bit wasn’t that funny. Jones has done better.

Ron, the segment was not intended to be ‘funny’.

Do you think it’s okay to call African Americans “niggers”? Or to call Jewish people “Bar code” or “Firewood” or “Hook-nose”?

Yet, somehow, it’s okay in the minds of these people (and others) to continue to call Native Americans “redskin”

Confronting hatred isn’t funny…but it IS the right thing to do.

Hmm. It was an oddly unsatisfying segment.

How about the Braindeads. The Washington Braindeads. That’s not demeaning,is it? Football has a long tradition of Braindead team owners, Braindead fans. It’s an honor, actually. The Braindead Name is meant to honor Washington DC and all of history, and it honors the Braindead football community. The Washington football fans should be proud to wear and display the Braindead name and spend a lot of money on the Braindead logo, to wear and flaunt.

Wear it proudly, Washington fans! What. That’s not offensive.

That awkward moment for settlers faced with the reality, actual dialogue from native people themselves, that we find it extremely offensive when our cultural identity is misappropriated or used in stereotyping mascotry or costume, let alone a dictionary defined slur word identifying us as a people. It would not be tolerated with other cultures, why is that we are supposed to accept it … haven’t accepted it for generations ago. Its time to change history. Change the name to “fore-skins” (you know forefathers) problem solved.

Those not offended - Harm upon one of us, is harm upon all – that’s our moral compass as a culture … time to walk with your people who are hurt by stereotypes, and called the slur name. – See the website “changethemascot” where you will see all the tribes who have signed and adopted resolutions to end offensive mascotry, and team names. – I will tell you this, I would NEVER dare to put on a headdress for I know that’s earned in ceremony, let alone wear war paint mocking my culture for the celebration of any sport. If we would not manufacture and wear as an accessory the “purple heart,” or “merit stripes,” cause it looks cool, then why wear chicken feather’d headdress, and fake braided wigs at the game?

It is the Daily Show, it is intended to be both funny and thought provoking. If the show isn’t it will be canceled.

I suspect that this is one of those cases where they thought that the segment would be funny but it ended up being far more serious. It’s happened before in the history of the show, and it will happen again. It was still a good segment.

Additionally, because most of us were already prepared for it thanks to the whining of the idiotic fans who appeared on the show, it was not as funny as it may have been if we were seeing it cold.

“Foreskins” is good. I will adopt that- it’s punchier than “The Football Team with the Name That I Will Not Say”. Thanks!

It’s not that hard Washington fans. Change the name to the Warriors, change the logo to an Arrow, or a Tomahawk, and lose the Mascot.

Or if people are still offended by the arrow or tomahawk, then do all of the above, and change the logo to a simple “W” inside a circle.

Sometimes people say things about a particular group or use expressions behind closed doors that they’d be mortified to be overheard saying by members of that group. The show set up that exact situation, and sure enough the fan group felt awkward about it. But whose fault is that? For all their protestations, I think the fans know on some level it’s difficult to defend the use of that name, and they didn’t want to do it in front of the people who have the most right to say whether or not it’s offensive.

Another victimization fantasy by a group of privileged white bigots. They’re willing to use derogatory terms when referring to others, but when confronted by those other people, they feel threatened. Ergo, they’re the victims. Right. Got it.

Snyder will only change the name when the team owners pressure change. If they start to see a dip in revenue when others siphon off profit from the use of their logo. The team can still sue, but their in not as good as a position to win than before the trademark was cancelled.

How about Warriors, but with an AR15? That would be getting with the times.

While I appreciate Jon’s comedy, this segment illustrates that beyond the hype Comedy Channel’s corporate-ness makes it cave with anything even approaching real controversy.

Maybe this is about as funny as people’s resolute lack of sensitivity can be. Maybe that makes us more uncomfortable than it does mirthful. Maybe that’s not a bad thing.

Or a left-pointing arrow with a red circle around it and a line through it, in deference to the tea party. Gotta throw the bigots a bone, y’know.

Or change the name on a weekly basis, this week the “Washington Sucks” would be appropriate. Last nights game: Giants 45 - Washington Sucks 14.

Actually Washington DC’s NBA franchise, the Wizards, used to be named the Bullets. They were forced to change it because it was considered insensitive due of the high murder rate in DC at the time.

So ironically enough, something similar in the same exact city has already been used in the past.

The issue of inappropriate mascots and names goes way beyond just sports. For us white people, the use of these names has become a cultural norm. We’ve lived with the use of these names our entire lives without the conception that these names could be derogatory to other people. To us, they arean’t. To us, they are normal, and they reflect who we are as sports fans at all levels of competition. Well, guess what. We were wrong when we chose those names, and we’re wrong for defending their use. Identifying myself as a Seminole or a DC football fan can be, and is offensive to those who have actual cultural rights to stake that claim. I cannot superimpose my shallow desires to use their name at the expense of their dignity. Continuing the use of these historically derogatory names only reflects on our cultural naivete and intellectual indifference. The world is bigger than just us white people. We should show much more respect to those who unwillingly sacrificed their cultures for our benefit. Look up, not down.

How about the “Washington Filibusters” or the “Washington Deadlocks”
