Discussion: WATCH: St. Louis Orchestra Applauds As Protestors Sing 'Requiem For Mike Brown'

Discussion for article #228467

Such an eloquent, powerful, and entirely appropriate protest. I teared up watching. I am so pleased that many in the audience, both black and white, stood to join in the protest and even more applauded, including orchestra members. But the shocked look of some audience members in their evening finery showed how far this protest movement has to go.

Wow. That gave me the chills reading that. That was a great way to make a powerful protest

Yes it was.

The only people that seem to get this are Ferguson police officers and the racist right wing.

Kudos to conductor / orchestra to let the protest play out.

Any body notice the ‘chit-eating-grin’ man and his mouth-breather partner?

I did. He was an obvious asshole and the look on her face was obvious that she doesn’t get it.

Was he an official of some sort? I think the camera person asked him for a comment or reaction, so perhaps he’s a Person Of Note. He certainly responded with a practiced looking “smile” in place of a response.

He could have been because someone did ask him a question. The woman sitting next to him looked like she was ready to bolt with both hands planted on the arms of the seat

OMG haha…that woman with the smiley husband and the look of horror and confusion on her face at the 1:15 mark made my morning. They should be horrified like that daily and mercilessly until the shit sinks in.

Did you hear what he said off camera? “He was a thug.” When the camera woman returns to him, she asks him to repeat it: he just idiotically grins. The camera woman also says the woman next to him was cussing. See this for an interview with the organizers.

Yes, the conductor and musicians deserve credit. It was a powerful example of the value of peaceful protest. There are levels of irony here as well. I note the many empty seats in that hall. As a classical musician, my peers worry about the fact that our audiences are aging and elitist - and we are training our students to include outreach and connection to a broader society in their musical futures. Many in that audience needed to hear this protest, and it was heartening to me that younger voices were the ones to speak up.

That was absolutely beautiful!! It actually brought a couple of tears to my eyes and made me feel like crying. I had heard the report of this happening on CNN yesterday, where they lambasted it as an unwelcome interruption that was characterized as disruptive. They also said that those singing were asked to leave. It looks like they did so completely on their own from the video. So even that characterization in the media was Bullshit. That was very moving indeed. The look on a few of those stuffed-shirts in the audience said it all. Those that were clapping were able to go beyond their class and station in life to see that Michael Brown’s life was snuffed out by this asshole cop for no justifiable reason.

It didn’t hurt that they were singing in tune.

I like this, but would imagine there weren’t a lot of police officers in the venue. Perhaps they should try it at the next monster truck rally, or any all you can eat place.

Yep------------

So glad to know that…

It’s our youth that will pull us out of the morass that is today’s DuckDyNasty, malignorant society that is the TeaXians’ view of the US.

So not a Person of Note, just a jackass. It would be fitting to track down the names of these fine citizens and publish them widely.

Particularly among a crowd that normally wouldn’t experience it in person.

Would’ve been great if a couple of the orchestra joined in - it seemed simple enough to to fake for someone with their skills.
