Discussion: WATCH: Rich Lowry Claims 'Forced Kissing' Isn't Sexual Assault

Discussion for article #230909

Why is it so often the case that this rich, entitled, (allegedly) heterosexual males who argue against the reality of sexual assault are so often either (a) creepy old men with the general appeal of Jabba the Hutt or (b) creepy young guys who look like they dosed sorority girls with roofies at Dartmouth or Yale or Princeton?

[hint: rhetorical question: I know all about privilege and entitlement]

If someone forced themselves like that upon his mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt or niece he’d be fine with it. Nice guy.

STOP PUTTING THESE FUCKING RAPE APOLOGISTS ON TV.

Rich Lowry wrote this about Sarah Palin’s first appearance on the national stage debate appearance (sorry)…

I'm sure I'm not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, "Hey, I think she just winked at me." And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. This is a quality that can't be learned; it's either something you have or you don't, and man, she's got it.

…and with that paragraph enabled the rest of us never to take him seriously again if he lives to 130. He’s a loony.

Well Sarah Palin made this little creep jizz in his pants when he imagined she was winking at him during the GOP convention. Didn’t he feel violated then, or did he enjoy that? Seriously though, what is this bizarre right-wing desire to downplay cases of sexual assault and rape? Limbaugh has been doing it for years, George Will joined the bandwagon a few years ago, and Howard Kurtz has been poo-pooing the recent Bill Cosby accusations, calling it a media circus. Is it all part of their underlying contempt for women? Am I missing some ideological reason for this from the right?

Didn’t watch the clip, but did Rich let everyone know he is a UVA grad, who edited the monthly Virginia Advocate while there?

Christ does this feckless, milquetoast asswipe need a fucking beating.

I’d like Rick to be placed in a prison cell with strapping Aryan Nation fellow and have him perform some “forced kissing” on him and see if he then doesn’t think he was assaulted.

Rich Lowry has always been my go-to guy for advice and expertise on sexual assault.

I was also very upset by the fact that as the other panelists are rightly jumping all over Lowry for that comment, the CNN moderator (Stephanopoulos) cut them off after 23 seconds with “We are going to have to stop it right there. That’s going to have to be the last word. You guys take this…”

The impression left to the non-discerning viewerr was that “forced kissing is sexual assault” is a controversial viewpoint open to varying opinion.

It’s back to the same old. Ask him if he went into a room with 5 strange guys, all bigger & stronger than him, and one of them slowly cornered him and forced a big old French kiss if he would fine with that sign of affection. If not, he needs to shut up.

I do see the problem though, in many ways there are so many shades of grey. A clueless attempt at a kiss by someone misreading signals is one thing but there is worse and more frightening varieties of “just a kiss”. He doesn’t seem to get that so dismisses them all as harmless.

That’s certainly a consideration, but to me the key word is “forced.” I think if you force anyone to do anything it would have to be considered an assault, and forcing someone to kiss you is to me certainly an offense you should have to answer for. But we’ve long been at a point where if liberals say you shouldn’t stick paper clips in electrical outlets, the RWNJs will complain about nanny-statism etc. etc.

Wish I could “like” this 100 times. It gets right to the heart of the Sunday talk shows and their need to make everything a false equivalency. Whether it is sexual assault or racism to name just two of many issues, both “sides” are equal to the MSM. Their kowtowing to the right-wing is nothing less than vile and disgusting.

Any woman listening to Lowry will understand in a heartbeat how mistaken he is, and Lowry’s viewpoint isn’t the one they’re going to go with regardless of how Steph let the conversation wither away.

Rich, it really isn’t a good idea for you to go on TV. You really are not ready for it.

Yes, true. I guess the line for me has always been whether one feel threatened or not and can just safely brush off the attempt.

Again, the Lowry’s never get this distinction because it’s not black and white and always default to something not being a big deal.

“…they had an agenda…”

Yes. They oppose rape.

Republicans, on the other hand, excuse it, and further want to promote rapist’s fatherhood rights.

The reason that I don’t watch Sunday talk shows is that they invite Lowry and his ilk and expect wisdom. Actually they have this idea that balance requires an idiot with nothing to say.

What the hell?
What world does he live in?
These conservatives and their definitions of rape and sexual assault is starting to be troubling.

Why does it have to be a female relative of his? He’s saying that a man could come up to him and force a kiss and it wouldn’t be assault. Someone should take him up on that.
