While it takes some hard work to get through med school and one probably has to memorize a bunch of stuff, most surgery has more to do with dexterity than brains.
Before someone sends a nastygram in reply: I’m by no means putting all doctors in the category of “dumbass.” My own mom was a physician who graduated med school (UC Berkeley) in the early 50s. She, of course, was expected to go into OB/GYN, but she went into orthopedics, instead. Her joy was in figuring out underlying causes of people’s physical problems and she was intuitive and resourceful in treating them. In the 70s, she was using acupuncture for some patients with chronic pain (in concert with other treatments).
There are many like her in the profession today, but unfortunately, I have run into docs who have little imagination or interest in doing more than throwing some medication at a problem and who take as gospel and guide the latest study without question of either the study or its application to the person in front of them.
