A moving and fitting eulogy for a fine public servant.
If that were my loved one I’d feel better for having heard that. And this is the kind of writing that doesn’t depend on rhetorical effects, or pure intellect. You need a deep well of insight and humanity to draw on if you’re going to achieve that sort of thing. He’s truly remarkable that way.
Yes.
" You need a deep well of insight and humanity to draw on if you’re going
to achieve that sort of thing. He’s truly remarkable that way."
And that’s the kind of insight and humanity that egomaniac Ted Cruz, who dreams to be President, will never, ever possess.
Meanwhile, inglorious basterds like Walker, Cruz, Jindal, Brownback, Kobach, Perry, et al. continue to live and mouth-breathe.
“Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince:
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!”
-- Horatio to the dying Hamlet
I am still trying to wrap my head around Cruz “joking” that Joe Biden is a joke the same week Biden’s son dies.
Cruz is truly an insensitive buffoon, with no empathetic qualities. Why would anyone vote for such a non-person?
I believe the short version of that answer is “'MURRRRKUHHH!” There’s also something about guns and Benghazi, but those are just side issues. ![]()
My own observations tell me those same people, by and large, are incapable of empathy for anyone unlike themselves. Cruz most certainly fits that profile. I’d bet my next $100 that the vast majority of Cruz’s supporters are of like-mind.
Thank you, President Obama. I’m teary after watching the whole link. I just know the Bidens are truly grateful for your heartfelt, very touching words. Rest in peace, Beau Biden.
I watched the entire memorial service. I knew the President’s eulogy would be one to be remembered for the ages and it was. I am so delighted to know those of you here at TPM took the time to at least listen and/or watch the eulogy by our wonderful President. This is a special man and there is a very special relationship between this President and Vice President unlike anything that has been seen ever. It tells you how lucky we are to have these two great men representing our country, regardless of the Darcy’s and Valentius among us and the rest of the fire baggers,
Cruz dreams of winning an election…not being President. There’s a difference. Cruz has demonstrated his lack of empathy, his shallowness. Even his own fellow republican Senators dislike him.
That is who tis President is and why I love him the way I do and have always loved him for being the good and decent man he is
Beau wasn’t even in the ground yet when that “joke” was made. That behavior was…OK OK I can’t say it here… I didn’t like Cruz to begin with. I saw him as an opportunist and a liar with no personal honor or integrity, your classic DC politician. And now his own party cannot fail to see it too. Yet they will choose to ignore it. And then vote for this pond scum.
Now Cruz joked about Biden in a time of profound grief. Add classlessness to Cruz’s list of crap. I fear for my country if he is the nominee much less elected.
Nixon and Cruz. Peas in a pod.
Edit after 5 hours of thought:
I hope Cruz goes down in ignominious defeat. I hope he makes an utter epic fool of himself in the process and is tossed in the dust bin a la Joe McCarthy. He has crossed all boundaries of civil behavior in my estimation with his pandering joke about Joe Biden in a time of profound pain and grief… Generally I believe in “leave well enough alone” but Ted? …No… I don’t think he is redeemable. He’s had his several chances. It will be all I can do to not use the most foul language when I post about him.
Chammy, I knew I would get teary before clicking on the video. I am nearly always moved listening to President Obama give this kind of talk/speech, etc. I know the Bidens and Obamas are pretty close.
Even the emails I receive back from the White House (the ones with Obama’s signature) DO read like he actually wrote them – it’s what I’ve come to expect pretty much each time. Remember the big discussion we were all having recently regarding the TPP … well, I had already written another email to President Obama with my observations and my concerns. The response I received was so well thought out, I’d swear he sat down and wrote to me personally. I am reminding myself lately to really remember these times and the Obama presidency because, though I personally have has really rough and tough times, I believe this man really does have a better future in mind when he does most of what he does.
This eulogy was really amazing. I should be so lucky.
I’ve watched Obama at different times. The man understands what being a good father is. But more then that (and it’s intrinsic to being a good parent) he knows how to be a man. It’s way more than just being male and able to reproduce. Biden understands as well and I for one admire his way of going home every day to his kids while pursuing his own dreams. Classy that.
And these qualities make good leaders. They are the kind of things I look for in the people I vote for to lead us. I sure as hell don’t see any of what I admire in the GOP clown train.
Beatty,
A long time ago I met my Congressman when he stopped by my house unannounced looking for my vote. That was how Mo Udall campaigned. On a very personal level. We struck up a correspondence …actual letters … in envelopes … with stamps. Email was way in the future. I know that Mo dictated the content and then signed the letter himself. Because it was a shaky signature due to his Parkinson’s. And I could see the ink.
That was another age now.
It’s entirely possible Obama himself did answer your missives …or at least some of them. He does this unannounced. He does read some messages to the White House and I think he answers some.
Each day Obama is at the helm is one that makes me confident we are led well.
I know. I’m so going to miss him when he retires from the presidency. It’s exactly why I’m reminding myself to stop and smell the roses now … because I’ve really been proud of our President Barack Obama these last six and counting years. The nation chose wisely – twice. I believe history will be very kind to these years guided by Obama.
When he and Michelle were in Charlottesville a few years back, I very much wanted to go downtown and just get a glimpse. Unfortunately for me, I was experiencing migraine headaches related to my spinal issues. When that happens, plenty of cool fluids, air conditioning and a dark space are all I want. I was so very disappointed, but there’ll be other times I’m hoping.
Glad to hear you had such a great personable representative in Mo Udall. Rarity, big-time.
Mo was pretty good at basketball too.
I’ll not soon forget his stopping by my house one hot August day. Oddly my current local state (not national) senator did the very same thing. I gave both water, Tucson being in a desert.
