In the meantime, I forget where I read it but they didn’t bother to hide that it was them. They used hackers and distributors who were known to be associated with the Kremlin. The general approach seems less to completely fool you and more to keep you guessing at what’s real and what isn’t, what you can believe and what you can’t, so eventually you’re unable to know what’s what or how to respond.
