You’re correct, of course. I’m just completely lacking in optimism right now. I’ve not been around on TPM for the last 2 months because of that.
Did you see Madonna. She screamed over the mic to the DC crowd “Those of you don’t think this means anything F**K YOU!” she said it it a couple of times, it was so funny. Then she sang one of her songs,it was sooo cool.
…heard it at least 2X before the feed was severed.
Welcome back
It’s not a chant, but this is clearly an atonement march.
Just did a quick check of Fox News–covering tornadoes somewhere in the South. Does anyone know if they have devoted any time of coverage to the million + people in the streets today?
The surprise would be if FUXNoise even mentions the protests. They’ll probably show pictures and label them as women who showed up fashionably late to celebrate Trump’s inauguration.
They won’t hold back this tide …
Some pix I took from the Boston rally @about 10:30 a.m. while the crowd was still building.
Uploading…There’s a ‘nasty woman’ pic board.
The picture is of Trump wearing makeup.
I just got back from the DC march…it’s really enormous. I couldn’t get into the area where the speakers are b/c there were so many people, so I walked around to the East and North and those areas are also packed…for blocks.
It was pretty incredible.
There were wide ranges of various groups of people…mostly women but some men as well. LOTS of older women…more than I really expected. Lots of young people. No age group dominated. A lot of white people but also lots of people of color.
One of the things that struck me were the signs and who was carrying them…If you had taken all of the people and all of the signs and tried to match up who would carry which one, you’d be wrong. It was great.
It was good that various groups gave out signs/posters (including the cool new Shepherd Fairey ones) at the subways and along the route so that anyone who wanted to carry a sign would be able to.
There were tons of homemade signs, t shirts, and the hats…
It was not a mean spirited march. It was serious, but it was not an angry violent group of people.
I think that the turnout is much greater than the organizers expected. It was very heartening and inspiring. It was exactly what my spirits needed after yesterday. A couple of men I spoke w/ said they were shocked at how many people turned out and it made them feel good. And not alone. I hope that the organizers will be able to capture contact info for the people who were there for future marches, organizing. Because this was a united group, and if we can work together, we can get through the next 4 years and try to minimize the damage to our country and each other.
My friend rented a bus and the woman who drove it is the person whose limousine was set on fire yesterday at the inauguration. She said she was in it and was told to get out so she wouldn’t be burned.
MSNBC just switched to Pence, and Trump speaking at the CIA. What a depressing bring down from all those exciting rallies. I am changing the channel.

There was a rally here in Tucson and elsewhere in AZ. Unfortunately I missed em because today was our day to volunteer for Lend-a-Hand. We bring fresh produce to folks who either by age, health or poverty cannot get to stores to buy food. The recipients don’t pay. But you should see the smiles and thanks we get back. trump just would not understand. I had meant to go to the demonstration ere but I also needed to do what I did. We each resist in our own way.
Ditto the ‘welcome back’. Sometimes you have to glom onto the little glimmers of light… and todays’ big glimmer… gotta keep the movement supplied with plenty of oxygen .
470,000 riders by 1 pm. Unpresidented!
Cspan carrying still. Good arial shots.
I posted a few shots I’d taken in this thread
Woo … Hoooooo –
You really should listen to the Trump speaking to the CIA. It’s almost like a stump speech. He started talking about the Churchhill bust in the oval office, then talked about how he was on Time magazine cover 14 times, more than anyone in history, then he went back to Churchill’s bust. Then there was something about that dishonest media. He said that from his perspective he thought there was 1,500,000 people at his inauguration and to trust him because he smart. He also relitigated the election a little bit too.
Fact check: Time magazine just issued a statement saying that Nixon has been on the cover more times than Trump. Ha ha ha
The news media are still saying “thousands of women march” … the count must be well over thousands of thousands (i.e., into the millions).
I attended a sister march in Fort Worth today. Registered attendees numbered just over 2600 people. The estimated number of people who turned out totaled 5-6000 and this is at a place that had planned for a march and nothing more.
The police were all polite and many were smiling at us. We had a great cross section of people; multliple ethnicities, genders, ages, etc. There were a couple of gents that looked like aged college professors marching beside me. There were like maybe 3 somewhat manic, but somehow forlorn looking Trump protesters.
