Discussion for article #237939

Boehner was just acknowledged at the funeral.

Getting close to Obama’s eulogy. Running a bit over, which is not surprising.

Obama is expected to speak around 1:45 p.m. ET.

LOL Oh, Catherine, clearly you’ve never been to a black church. It could be an hour before the president speaks.

That was the most incredible speech. I am so moved. It reminds me of the first time I heard him speak at the Convention lo these many years ago.

Actually it went on pretty much on schedule. It was so beautiful to watch such faithful people who even through an unspeakable tragedy, can find forgiveness, peace and love

He is a once in a lifetime. We will not see the likes of anyone like him for a long long time, if ever.

Absolutely…the incredible joy in the church could be felt through the cable. It truly is a response that shows that crappy kid is nothing…that love and forgiveness triumphs.

Well, Obama hit another one out of the park. He brought up the actual symbolism of the Confederate flag, gave a shout out to Nikki Haley’s recent stance (lest she forget what she said), brought up the need for some form of gun control, mentioning recent mass murders, as well as the 30 deaths a day from guns, called for better relations between the police and the people they serve (Boehner shown then on camera scrunched down in his seat and rolling his eyes, asshole), sang Amazing Grace and was totally, comfortably at home in that setting.

After the week he’s given to wingnuts, they must be in full raging froth mode.

Well done, sir. Well effing done.

The part where the President said that young man went into the church to start trouble, but that God works in mysterious ways was so powerful I am a non-believer myself but I understood the meaning and the power of that statement for the faithful.

“It was an act that he imagined would incite fear, and incrimination, violence and suspicion. An act he presumed would deepen divisions that trace back to our nation’s original sin,” Obama said, his voice rising in the cadence of the preachers who preceded him.

“Oh, but God works in mysterious ways!” Obama said, and the crowd rose to give him a standing ovation. “God has different ideas!”

  • Even this non-believer rose to my feet

Didn’t put that in, but that was one of the best things he said right there. The audience went wild.

Obama didn’t start speaking until almost 3:00 EST and was scheduled to go on at 1:45 EST, which is soooo very typical of black churches. We get to praisin’ and singin’ and a 45 minute sermon ends up being an hour and a half.
