Because Sessions had nothing to do with the Trump campaign, right?

ā€œI did not have communications with the Russiansā€¦ā€

Interesting response in that 1) turns out thatā€™s a big lie 2) itā€™s not responsive to the question Franken actually asked. Franken asked what would Sessions do if there was evidence that others had communicated with the Russians. My guess is that Sessions prepared this lie ahead of time and when asked a question sort of like the one he was expecting about his own activities, he rolled out the prepared response - the lie.

If Sessions is forced to resign, Trump will have to find somebody else from the Deep South willing to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act.

I admit that Iā€™ve watched All The Presidentā€™s Men a few times since the election - harboring a profound wish to see another corrupt 'pub admin go down in flames, I guess. But what Sessions said in response to Frankenā€™s question so reminds me of this exchange:

Howard Simons: Did you call the White House press office?
Bob Woodward: I went over there; I talked to them. They said Hunt hadnā€™t worked there for three months. Then a PR guy said this weird thing to me. He said, "I am convinced that neither Mr. Colson nor anyone else at the White House had any knowledge of, or participation in, this deplorable incident at the Democratic National Committee."
Howard Simons: Isnā€™t that what you expect them to say?
Bob Woodward: Absolutely.
Howard Simons: So?
Bob Woodward: I never asked about Watergate. I simply asked what were Huntā€™s duties at the White House. They volunteered he was innocent when nobody asked if he was guilty.
Howard Simons: Be careful how you write it.

Indeed. Which shows he was already trying to be misleading and is therefore evidence that goes directly to the intent necessary to prove perjury.

Precisely. It shows that Sessions anticipated the question and had a prepared response all ready to reciteā€¦ which he did. ā€œI have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians.ā€

That turns out not to be true. Which is beneficial in two ways. Shows Sessions himself is involved so he canā€™t oversee any investigation. And even better than that, demonstrates a strong pattern of trump officials lying about Russia, which every Democratic Senator / Rep should lock onto and recite ad nauseum. Every new info from Spicer / WH should receive the response, ā€œSo you say, but Flynn was lying about Russia, Pence was lying about Russia, Sessions was lying about Russia, etc. etc. So youā€™re lying now, right? Only way to disprove it is an independent investigation.ā€

Only problem being that the question Sen. Franken asked isnā€™t the one that Sessions had prepped for and, being the stumbling ballerina he is, Sessions still gave his prepared answer.

Oops

Looking at this objectively, I doubt they could get Sessions on a perjury charge.
Sen. Franken did not explicitly ask Sessions whether or not he had any meetings with anybody from the Russian government during the Presidential campaign. If Sessions had denied that then it would be an open and shut case but thatā€™s not what happened. In Senator Frankenā€™s written follow-up, he asks Sessions if he discussed the campaign with anyone from the Russian government and Sessions said ā€˜no.ā€™

Donā€™t get me wrong - none of this looks good for the Trump Administration but itā€™s a stretch to think Sessions is either going to resign or face charges for perjury.

Yeah, Iā€™m conflicted about whether Iā€™d want him to resign. Itā€™d be a thousand times better for civil rights if he were no longer AG. But it absolutely forces him to recuse himself on Russia-related matters, which is extremely helpful for any trump / Russia investigation.

Thereā€™s a new Ghost in town!
