That should be “You rip what you sew.”
You want to see how racism is alive and well, even flourishing? Read the comments on any article written by Washington Post columnist Gene Robinson. No matter the topic, racist are drawn to Robinson’s column like moths to a flame, its beyond despicable.
Yes, he is!
And he also stated in his “manifesto” that he couldn’t really find someone else who will help him start his “race war”, thus indicating that racists are a dwindling portion of the population.
Read this and get back to us.
He has plenty of ideological supporters, both directly and indirectly. They’re just not willing to go to prison for life, or die for the cause. The fact that you can’t recruit people to go guns blazing into a church as a potential suicide mission doesn’t even remotely indicate that racism is dwindling. That’s like saying that people within the pro-life movement don’t exist anymore because they’re not actively attacking abortion clinics.
O’Reilly really does protest too much, and he’s a huge dick.
Puppies - really recommend you read this: The Case for Reparations.
One of the problems I have with the modern Republican party and with outfits like Fox News is they have covertly (and sometimes not so covertly) fostered racism for fun and profit. That has given legitimacy to the remaining white supremacist groups, While they aren’t as powerful as they used to be they still exist. Roof came out of that subculture. Pulling down the confederate flags will marginalize those supremacist groups. So good for Nikki Haley and the corporate Republicans who are sticking a thumb in the eye of an ugly part of their base.
Hate isn’t the only emotion associated with racial prejudice. It might not even be the most important. If you think in stereotypes you have some level of prejudice. For example the other day I went to the DMV to register my car. When it came my turn I looked up and saw a young black woman behind the counter. I was surprised when she proved to be pleasant, professional, and efficient. I really enjoyed my encounter with her. As I left I realized that my surprise was due entirely to a stereotype I have of black women officer workers. I try hard not to have racist stereotypes, but even I suffer from them.
Well, in a Country that has a history of lynchings and mobbing blacks, I do believe not finding people who will help perpetrate such a crime as gunning down African-Americans is a huge, huge step forward away from racism.
I’ve read that article and the same applies to poor, uneducated whites as well.
@ ronbyers
In that case I do have stereotypes, but nothing to do with the person skin color…its just a deep aversion to the DMV
They can afford to take down the flag because they’ve still got their dog whistles
It’s not hard to imagine how Bill could have dragged his ex-wife around by her neck. He’s got issues.
You’re confusing the ideology of racism with the undertaking of extreme actions to perpetuate it, and you’re changing the context of the post I was responding to. What you’re saying is that just because people aren’t actively beating people in the streets and hanging people in mobs at the same rate we used to means that racism is going away. That’s absurd. Thankfully, now there are consequences that weren’t in place pre-Civil Rights that prevent the most heinous acts. That doesn’t mean the underlying hatred of some people doesn’t exist anymore. They just know that now they’ll face consequences for it.
Old white racist bigots like billo and kristal heads are exploding over not being able to be overtly bigoted racist…damn they just can’t say what they want anymore without getting push back from all sides.
That makes me smile.
Facebook has sucked most of the meaning out of the word “friend.”
Agreed!
Just look at the constant disrespect for the POTUS and first lady!
That they get away with it. And NO media outlet (print, internet, TV) pushes back or calls them out for it, is sadly shameful.
I would like to see an evening news anchor, like David Muir on ABC or NBC or CBS or anyone for that matter, have the actual strength to show what they say and follow up with the “NO THIS IS NOT OK for you to say that” response.
I think that as a business owner I’m “friends” with probably more direct competitors on Facebook than I am with people I actively speak to on a regular basis in a friendly manner. And I’ve probably “liked” and am following just as many politicians and pundits that I absolutely detest as I am following people I agree with and will vote for.
I agree with that and I probably used the wrong word when I said humans evolved to hate those outside their tribe (which is much more narrowly defined than race). I think a better word is probably mistrust. I respect that you are being honest about your prejudices and also that you are able to know that they are erroneous thinking. Have you read Daniel Kahneman’s “Thinking Fast and Slow”? The fact that we instinctively react one way, doesn’t oblige us to act on that. In fact, our first reaction is wrong at least as much as it’s right, and we hurt ourselves by not over-ruling the parts of the brain that drive those reactions.
That Washington Times person worked for Richard Nixon and his Southern Strategy campaign .
