Leave off “savant” and I agree
There is something there besides “idiot.”
As Wolff observed, the Democrats actually seem to want to talk about policy, whereas Trump, like many, many others, will do anything to avoid it. It’s a deep part of the connection many voters feel with him, hence the personality cult.
Almost completely unrelated, how many folks know that the issue that causes sickle cell anemia was sort of an evolutionary adaptation that helped people survive malaria? I overheard my wife and son were talking about sickle cell for some reason and he mentioned it.

The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” ☛ Newsweek: “A Cult of Ignorance” by Isaac Asimov
Russia’s BFF cranks the ignorance to 11. Another WH spokesperson explodes.
"The President sided with immigration hardliners in his administration and in Congress,"
… and retreated to take refuge among & pander to - the racist, bigoted, angry core of his remaining support - it is looking like - the more his general popularity shrinks, the more he will feed the toxically concentrated residual sludge.
@altdrew Not to worry - weasels are mustellines - related to skunks, wolverines, ferrets.
Except that policy is the core of his job. I agree he hates it. His approach is like a kid with ADHD and OCD combined. An attention span of under 30 seconds. And his tweet addiction. Thank the maker he doesn’t drive himself. He’s the poster child for distracted driving.
“…to the exclusion of otters.”
Good. We all like otters.
Orange Pustule Hitler and his Orange Pustules are all on the island now.
Burn the lifeboats. Burn ALL THE FUCKING LIFEBOATS!
“We have a government and laws and a flag, and they must all be sustained.
There are but two parties now, Traitors and Patriots. And I want hereafter to be ranked with the latter.”
Ulysses S. Grant, April 1861
Way back when I used to get Discover magazine (which was a “Scientific American” for dummies – covered pretty much the same topics, but without the heavy math…). There was a column in there written by a doctor who did a whole series of articles looking at the way in which genetic diseases may ultimately kill us early but allow us to survive to fertility and reproduction before doing so. Sickle cell anemia is one…
There is also the hypothesis that cancer (cell mutation) may, in fact, be viewed as a sort of “positive” over the very, very long term – that it is, in fact, active evolution. It’s just that some cell mutations lead to good things and others lead to death. Some branches of the family tree live, some die. (Not that it helps when you and yours are “evolving” in this way.)
Would it be at all premature to speculate that the walls around the Dotard are beginning to cave in?
I keep waiting for exactly that
Probably. I have been hoping for that for too many months now to get my hopes up.
Two points:
-
even a signed agreement has never meant much to The Dumpster. Just look at the number of firms he has refused to pay the agreed upon contracted fees.
-
any “agreement” that The Donald makes is only good if he has gotten 100% Plus of what he desired.
When I was on the opposite side during negotiations in the 90s those points were a given and we planned and created contingencies based on those experiences. We also understood we were great good guys as long as we agreed with everything he said, even if he made 180 degree tangents within just a few minutes. The Dumpster has always been this way, what we see today is what he has done his whole career. He was and is a bully, will lie if it benefits him, it is always about him.
At some point, with the Blue Tsunami approaching, shouldn’t Republicans in Congress start sending up bipartisan veto-proof bills to the WH so they can at least play the “i can get things done” card? Call Trumps bluff, he said he’d sign whatever Congress sends up, so send something. Trump will continue to burn the GOP (and our country) to the ground until they stand up to him.
…and this will send Perdue and Cotton racing to the microphones…‘Uh, I was reading my iPhone while all this stuff was happening! I can’t be expected to LISTEN to this buffoon…wait, what? Oh yeah my talking points…it never happened!’
The Freedumb Caucus will stop anything that even smells bipartisan.
So what is the calculus? what if the composition of a minimum level of core support that Trump will need to retain control of the executive branch?
If Trump’s overall general support drops to 25% - but 15-18% of that is rabid - unwilling to compromise on anything - and -very very well armed - ardent right wing - willing to take matters into their own hands willing to participate in right-wing militia actions - & If he still holds this group and still holds the position of Commander in Chief - 70-75% opposition will be moot - up until an election changes the power structure… which then then makes one concerned about the possibility of Trump triggering some massive destabilizing event to justify suspending the electoral process.
This presupposes intellect, which is quite a stretch I’d say.
