After the joint interview with Ari Melber last night, Stone called Corsi and Sam Nunberg “Judas No. 1” and “Judas No. 2.” I’m not sure which is which.

Marci Wheeler (Emptywheel) notes that Corsi had a twitter post on Jan 30 2017 announcing that he had been hired as the Infowars DC News Bureau chief. The Special Counsel is essentially attempting to investigate and establish whether the job Corsi got just a week after Trump was inaugurated was a form of hush money to keep Corsi from testifying against Stone. Stone had claimed that he learned of Wikileaks’ designs through Corsi. In truth, Stone and Corsi discussed what Stone learned from Guccifer 2.0 (GRU) and Wikileaks as to the stolen information from the DNC, and discussed how to advise the Trump campaign and how to leverage that info for more attacks on HRC.
Marci ties this to the SSCI’s statement that it was opening an inquiry into Russian interference (1/11/2017) and that Roger Stone’s role was a topic of interest. She also cites this NYT article from 1/19/2017 by Michael Schmidt as one that got Roger rattled a bit.
There’s one other piece of information that Marci didn’t cite (because she has a general opposition and aversion to it): the Steele Dossier (also published on 1/11/17).
Of these 3 items, only the Steele Dossier named the Trump campaign and Wikileaks. The Burr-Warner joint statement does make a vague reference ‘individuals associated political campaigns’. The NYT piece identifies Stone by name as a Trump campaign adviser “whose possible links to Russia are under scrutiny.” It also said that
“the F.B.I. is leading the investigations, aided by the National Security Agency, the C.I.A. and the Treasury Department’s financial crimes unit. The investigators have accelerated their efforts in recent weeks but have found no conclusive evidence of wrongdoing, the officials said. One official said intelligence reports based on some of the wiretapped communications had been provided to the White House.”
However, the Steele Dossier is referenced in the NYT piece and is the thing that I think would’ve caught Roger Stone’s eye. Pay special attention to this paragraph:
The decision to open the investigations was not based on a dossier of salacious, uncorroborated allegations that were compiled by a former British spy working for a Washington research firm. [HINT: THIS IS THE STEELE DOSSIER] The F.B.I. is also examining the allegations in that dossier, and a summary of its contents was provided to Mr. Trump earlier this month. (sic)
Representatives of the agencies involved declined to comment. Of the half-dozen current and former officials who confirmed the existence of the investigations, some said they were providing information because they feared the new administration would obstruct their efforts. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the cases.
I respect Marci Wheeler a great deal, but I think she’s just wrong about the Steele Dossier (and its accuracy). She says Stone often cited this NYT piece as evidence that the ‘deep state’ was following him and that he had been targeted by a FISA warrant. However, what makes this piece threatening to Stone are the references to the FBI and other intel, and the Steele Dossier. Nothing else among these sources creates liability for Stone. The idea the Christoper Steele outlined how Russia used stolen information and got it to Wikileaks and coordinated with the Trump campaign had to scare the crap out of him now that it was in the FBI’s hands.
What Stone is really saying is that the Steele Dossier named Wikileaks and Russian intel, and he knew he was a go-between for both, and he knew that he had admitted as much in real time during his various twitter posts in 2016. The Steele Dossier is the document that tied him to the investigation. That’s what freaked him out, and that’s why he worked to get Corsi a job so that he could effectively pay him ‘hush money’.
