This commenter’s reference to McCarthyites is a trope that seeks foremost to frame discussion of Russian interference as Democratic party politics, damned the avalanche of evidence being discovered by our press and which has progressed from smoke to unmistakable fire. This trope has been pushed especially by Greenwald during his years, together with Wikileaks, of undermining of the US intelligence community and enabling the destabilization, not only of our democracy, but also those of the entire western alliance. It’s either that or everyone’s lying eyes that are deceived upon seeing the single degree of separation barely separating Greenwald, Jill, Rohrbacher, Assange, Farage, Stone, the European extreme right, Breitbart, alt-right, and the rest of the cabal enabling a Russia that is no longer communist but rather now a fascistic anti-liberal organized crime federation.
It’s only as good as texting, but it’s free, and its a very good alternative to FB. I don’t have a FB account, and am in fact on an anti-FB crusade these days.
I had a beer yesterday with a very conservative friend (i do have a few) who pays pretty close attention to news going on in the world. He is most certainly NOT a fan of the Demented Donald, but he also simply sees nothing wrong with FB, or any other form of social media being used by anyone, domestic or foreign, to influence opinions and preferences of political candidates. Social media is the domain of anything goes. Truth is irrelevant. This is a perfect example of the mindset that our democracy is up against.
Republicans have always been “anything goes” types.
The win is all that matters.
True dat.
Yes, the Dem-infested CIA would certainly go out of its way in its zeal to benefit Hillary.
Days after Donald Trump pulled out his disorienting win, Zuckerberg told a tech conference that the contention that fake news had influenced the election was “a pretty crazy idea,” showing a “profound lack of empathy” toward Trump voters.
But all the while, the company was piling up the rubles and turning a blind eye as the Kremlin’s cyber hit men weaponized anti-Hillary bots on Facebook to sway the U.S. election. Russian agents also used Facebook and Twitter trolls, less successfully, to try to upend the French election.
ProPublica broke the news that, until it asked about it recently, Facebook had “enabled advertisers to direct their pitches to the news feeds of almost 2,300 people who expressed interest in the topics of ‘Jew hater,’ ‘How to burn jews,’ or, ‘History of “why jews ruin the world.”’”
The talk persists of Zuckerberg running for president.
I feel it very safe to say that the America we grew up with and loved is long gone. Very few of us, relatively speaking, were even alive during WWII. Thus, we do not have any experience with the near universal call of Americans to join our efforts for a single, national cause. We do hear stories about the accepted sacrifices our grandparents endured for the greater good of this country. After that, we still hear stories about the sacrifices our grandparents made for the sake of their children after the war, so they could have a better life than themselves. Those days a long gone. America, i fear, is permanently divided.
Curious why you can’t call them in the phone or send an email. Just asking because there are other ways of staying in touch
I must agree. We aging baby boomers recognize that our country today is different from the one we grew up in, and we’re fearful, puzzled, pessimistic we’ll never see peace or prosperity again. Unfortunately there are not enough mental health professionals to turn to to talk about this. You needed to make the appointment on November 9, and nobody did.
I didn’t like this guy before, now I’m starting to think he’s a serious menace.
BINGO! Nailed it!
Backing Bernie would assume that Russia is socialist (which Bernie is not). Russia is close to a dictatorship currently and Trump certainly fits that bill better than Bernie.
Hmmm…
we are all thousands of miles apart. FB or something similar is very useful.
My husband is what I consider smart and he fell for all the negative “stuff” on facebook because he trusts his friends who were spreading the BS. He disliked Hillary and believed every thing posted about her that was negative. This type of information is insidious and slowly begins to brainwash you if you see if often enough. Like Fox News, if you pick and choose the stories and the bias, after a while, it seems like fact.
This statement alone is so utterly wrong that it discredits everything else you wrote.
Which is why I said:
The way the Neo-McCarthyites in the “Democratic” Party yammer on about Russia you’d think it was the old, Communist Soviet Union, instead of a Capitalist Plutocracy run by billionaire oligarchs.
I do remember when we all thought last year was so terrible.
Yes, this. I spoke with my sister before the election. She told me she could never vote for Hillary because she was a pay-for-play secretary of state. I asked her if she understood that there was no actual evidence of any if these accusations. She said yes, but didn’t care and wouldn’t bring herself to vote for Hillary, even though she hates Trump.
She’s an avid consumer of Houston’s local talk radio circuit.
The brain wash from the noise machine is real, and its victims are our wives, husbands, brothers, sisters, parents, and children. I don’t know how to fight its influence. Even if I talked with every family member every day, I couldn’t match the time they have this trash on in the car and at home and during lunch.
