Discussion: Vermont Stops Payments To Gruber As Consultant For Single-Payer Project

Discussion for article #230390

According to the local reports, Gruber hasn’t been exactly putting in a lot of work either and so far, his reports have been rather, well, lacking.

This is bullshit. If you hire someone to do a job you don’t get to say “You know that money we agreed to give you in return for your labor on this job? Yeah, we aren’t going to give that to you, but we still expect you to finish the job.”

If you don’t want him on the payroll anymore, which is understandable, then fire him and hire someone else to finish the job, but saying we aren’t going to pay you, but we still expect you to do the work is a load of crap.

Sounds like they definitely need some economic help: You must finish the work, while I only pay you half.

Yeah, that works.

Yeah, it’s funny. I don’t remember Vermont being a slave state.

Sounds like they fired Gruber, but not the “team”, i.e. the grad students who are likely doing all the real work anyway. They will continue to be paid.

I suppose that is one way to interpret what is said in the article, however this:

Seems to suggest they still expect him to play a part in completing the work.

And even with the initial interpretation you still have the issue that the Grad Students work for Gruber not the state. If he isn’t going to be being compensated why would he have them continue to work on that project instead of shifting them over to a new project?

“I have told Mr. Gruber that I expect his team to complete the work that we need to provide the legislature and Vermonters with a public health care financing plan,” Miller said in the statement. “I’ve informed Mr. Gruber that that we will not be paying him any further for his part in completing that work.”

Good luck with that, not liking what someone said has never been grounds for voiding a contract and to expect the work be finished for free is laughable!
