…and he liked the gay guy a whole lot more than the FauXian gravy stain.
I think the battle within the officials of the American Catholic church is pretty funny to watch play out like this.
They seriously screwed the pooch on this one. They should never have let that woman into the same room with the Pope, as it was quite obvious where she was going to run with any encounter with him, let alone actually talk with him.
And there was absolutely no potential upside from such a meeting for the Vatican. None.
Or, in other words, Kim is a liar…
This gay student is the pope’s partner? Seems to me THAT should be your top story.
Watch to see what happens to Vigano, the papal nuncio who seems to have arranged the meeting with Kim Davis. I’ve got my fingers crossed that this fiasco will lead to another cull of John Paul II and Benedict’s acolytes in the US hierarchy.
It might not serve the Vatican’s interests…
Such encounters are arranged by the Vatican ambassador and his staff, not the pope’s delegation…
The Vatican nuncio in Washington is Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano…
He has since strongly taken up the religious liberty charge championed by U.S. bishops, suggesting that he might well have supported Davis in her battle over gay marriage…
…but looking at who this story suggests handled arranging the meeting, it sounds like making it look like the Pope supported Davis could well have fit his interests. So a mix of Church politics and Kim and her lawyers standard self-aggrandizing, kinda what I suspected.

Ignorance is no defense for an ordinary person much less an august personage such as a staff and assistant-laden pontiff. When you dance with the devil, Hell is the price you must pay…
If we’re lucky, Vigano will be appointed Bishop of the Diocese in Wasilla, Alaska
When I heard Pope Francis had met with Kim Davis, I merely shrugged. I noted immediately that it wasn’t publicized.
I was surprised at the turmoil it caused. Too many people think of the Pope as a Republican Pope or a Democratic Pope. That’s not how it is. I’m not a Catholic but if you have a philosophic bent and are interested in history, you can’t escape learning about the church and the extraordinary extent to which the Catholic Church is able to absorb and live with contradictions. The ability to handle contradictions is considered a strength, not a weakness.
In a sense, Pope Francis heads a coalition and must be mindful of those who don’t agree with him 100% and accommodate them when he can, which was easy for him since he takes seriously the idea of conscientious objectors, even when it’s an oddball like Kim Davis who shuts out possible compromise.
Gay marriage remains the law of the land. And Pope Francis is a powerful ally when dealing with global warming.
Soon to be ex-Apostolic Nuncio Viganò, I hope, if he was the one who invited or approved the invitation of Kim Davis.
He has to vet everyone he shakes hands with? The blame is with Davis’s people presenting it as something it was not.
Absolutely right. That is precisely my take on this.
This was the only audience given. Davis is a lyingbitch when she claimed to have an audience. She shook hands in a receiving line.
Vatican: Oh, Mary, that hair! You have gots to change it - just a wee bit less “sister-wifey”, mmmkay?
Davis: So I won’t be recognized since the Vatican wants the meeting kept secret?
Vatican: Sure, honey, that’ll work. Whatever you gots to tell yourself.
Vatican (mutters aside): Oh, Jesus, will you just look at that smock!
Seriously, if you’re gonna grift, Davis and Staver, try making your lies less subject to easy verification.
Luckily, they are too stupid to realize this.
It’s not just the American Catholic Church, the battle is also going on with the wingnut brigade within the Vatican itself. The last time a Pope attempted to take on the Vatican (the Vatican bank, specifically) he mysteriously died thirty days after being elevated to the position of Pope.
The sincere question here is, why isn’t Kim Davis in jail?
