Discussion for article #239869
Perhaps it’s time such asshole behavior also goes into a computer database, and if that person goes to buy guns, at least some kind of alert goes out. And maybe notify the ex-employer if the person goes to buy weapons.
This guy and Dylan Roof were/are not mentally disturbed like Holmes and Lanza, these are hateful and violent assholes who knew exactly what they were doing.
If the murderer’s sexuality is bandied about as a possible contributing cause, I would think fairness should cause a re-examination of statements about several acknowledged sexual relationships among station employees that management and employees admitted in the post-murder coverage and how those relationships impacted the workplace in the last few years.
TV Shooter Handed Boss Wooden Cross
So is O’Reilly going to blame the culture of Christianity for this?
Yeah, I thought not.
Why on earth would that be a cause? He was arrogant, race-baiting, bullying…the list goes on and on. What does his sexuality have to do with this, any more than his race? He was a low life POS asshole. Those people come in all races, genders, religions, sexual orientations, political parties, etc., those things have no relevance.
So it’s “asshole behavior” you want regulated? I’m guessing you have no concomitant plans to apply for a weapon.
There are race and sexual orientation components to this incident, but I don’t think these elements are the defining cause. This shooter was a man with severe mental health issues that exploded in a deadly way. If he had found a black reporter or cameraman of his old employer’s, they would have been killed just a quickly and cruelly. The ease with which he was able to get a deadly weapon is terrifying as is his “justification” for the shooting. But he wasn’t grounded in reality.
Actually I want assholes to have their access to guns regulated. Dylan Roof and this jerk are two good examples. You disagree with this? What exactly are you saying needs to be “regulated”?
And I said “such asshole behavior” as well. This guy made threats when he was fired, and had to be escorted out by police. Yes, I said I think “such asshole behavior” should be documented, and if such a person goes to buy weapons, it should be flagged. Tell me why you disagree with that?
Exactly, to try to make a “victim” out of this guy because he was black/gay is just pathetic.
According to the unsigned statement, Flanagan handed the station’s news director a wooden cross on his way out the door, and said “You’ll need this.”
He also made a “derogatory comment” to Adam Ward, the WDBJ photographer who was killed Wednesday during the live newscast along with reporter Alison Parker.
Flanagan, according to the statement, said the police would need to remove him, and that he was going to “make a stink and it was going to be in headlines,” prompting a staffer to call 911.
Was this or should it have been enough for an involuntary commitment for assessment as a danger to self or others? This man was hostile, angry, depressed, out of touch with social reality (that cross) and showing bizarre behavior (that cross) and giving lightly veiled threats.
That’s exactly what I said, his behavior should be documented, and if a person like him goes to buy guns, there should be a flag. For some reason I was berated for that comment, but I like to think most sane people would agree.
My idea is something should have been done in the way of psychiatric assessment on the day he was fired. What was needed was some way to discern whether was it was simply ill-advised venting or whether it indicated deep seated psychiatric problems. Documenting his actions alone doesn’t tell you which it is.
Agreed on that. And as I said, when a guy like that goes to buy weapons (him needing to be escorted out by police would of course be documented, as would his threats), a computer base has to throw a red flag up. Pretty simple in the computer age.
First?
Locate the lockerfullofRWNJCongressionaltestes Wayne La Pierre has buried and surgically reattach them.
Then?
Convince the (R)-controlled House to craft and pass the legislation mandating the database creation.
Once done?
The Ammosexual Assh^le Registry would require listing at least 40M RWNJs.
Maybe?
Have neighbors and co-workers simply report one another.
And incentives?
For those who report the assh^les.
Like?
A rainbowfartingunicorn!
You just might be on something!

Because, as I hoped you would glean from my comment, something as vague as “asshole behavior” is wildly subjective. Unlike, say, a mandated stay in a mental facility, you will always find conflicting opinions about “asshole behavior.” Look no further than the poll numbers for Donald Trump. I find the man insufferable, almost impossible to tolerate. In that sense, he would qualify in my mind as someone who has demonstrated intense “asshole behavior,” while a quarter of Republican voters not only disagree with me, they want him to be their leader! If you are attempting to infuse clarity and meaning into the prefatory “such,” believe me, it won’t make anything more clear. You are still left with with the hugely divisive notion that assholes can be regulated by dint of their actions. Until said assholes break a law, they are only assholes, and free to enjoy all the privileges of the average American.
"This guy made threats when he was fired, and had to be escorted out by police."
That’s what I said and referred to when I said “such asshole behavior”, and that is not vague and can definitely be documented and put into a data base (a person needing to be escorted out by police when they get fired). Obviously the police were called, so it’s documented. You put that in a data base, and when he goes to buy weapons, a flag is raised. Not difficult at all.
And for the record, Wendy Davis said the exact same thing on Real Time last night.
