Discussion for article #246487
I spent most of college drunk, hungover, a ball of raging hormones, or some combination of all three…
Firearms seems a good addition to the mix…
Good for him, bad for us in Texas. I’d get the hell out too.
Seriously, fuck that law.
Thanks, Abbott and Texas Lege for the brain drain.
sigh
I wonder if this is the beginning of a trend where talent leaves open carry states to head to bluer pastures.
I hear toddlers are already leaving Iowa.
Now if Jordan Spieth would avoid the campus we would have a good story.
Sad day for my alma mater.
I would not want to be responsible for recruiting talent to UT right now…
Meanwhile, my Austin friend saw someone strutting around with his gun at the car wash today. Everyday errands are so much more meaningful when you know some idiot might accidentally end your life at any moment.
He probably was an advocate for that degenerate modern architecture. Something like this would be more appropriate for celebrating the martial bravery of those Sturmabteilung willing to carry guns for defense of the yellow rose of Texas against lawless invaders.

One side benefit of Texas going (even more) batshitcrazy? Trump, according to the latest polling, has pulled even with Cruz. If Cruz doesn’t get 50.1% of the vote, the delegates to the convention will be awarded proportionally.

Last week’s polling had Cruz leading by 8 points.
Cruz has to win big in Texas or it’s over
I don’t think the Texas legislature cares.
Molly Ivins wrote of the Lege (as she called it) that, “during their biennial sessions, every village in Texas knows the whereabouts of their idiot.”
I knew we would lose wonderful people because of this stupid law. But repubs don’t value education anyway. More resignations are no doubt on the near horizon, students will go to other schools, open positions will be turned down because who wants to be on a campus where guns are allowed.
I will be alright . . . . .until it isn’t. That’s how this kind of thing works. Sad part is, this the parents of the students voting in these Republicans that create these laws. The kids probably have a different opinion.
Sounds like they’re better off without him.
He’s absolutely right to do this, and I hope other professors bail out on the place as fast as possible for them. I have taught university for decades and I would never set foot in any classroom where carrying guns to class was permitted.
To date, no private university in Texas will allow guns. Even the conservative private universities like Baylor, SMU and TCU

Thought the R’s believed that “private was best.” Guess that doesn’t apply when private says “no penis substitutes.”
He’s more than a professor, he’s a dean. Unfortunately many of the professors won’t have the luxury of moving away like that. And even if some do leave, or get picked off by other schools, there will be plenty of young assistant-levels ready to fill the gap, given how terrible the academic hiring market is and how desperate many entry-level scholars are. UT is otherwise a great job.
Oh, and there’s a growing archipelago of state universities which are increasingly unpalatable to scholars lucky enough to choose where they go. One place that springs to mind is the University of Wisconsin, which has been brought to its knees by Walker’s and his cronies. They managed to basically and fundamentally undermine the meaning of tenure there. As such, UW is also facing a brain drain which will disproportionately affect the best higher education the state has to offer. Very sad. But of course, as someone else pointed out above, those families with money won’t be too affected; they can still send Johnny and Susie to a privy Out East.
Well, not just they don’t care. This is what they wanted – screwing up higher education.
My monitor is really happy I don’t drink coffee…
