Discussion: US House Candidate Who Beat Sanford Seriously Hurt In Wreck

Yep, they said weeks. I am thinking months, if not years in physical therapy. But she could be strong enough to balance it out and still run. People do amazing things, even if they are the opposing party.

Regardless of what he does, she’s going to get a ton of sympathy. That’s a good thing. As pshah said above, life is fragile, we’re all human, we should be able to show real kindness without sounding like we’re being opportunistic of the situation.

Note I said we should be able not that the world works like that.

Well, it takes a lot of energy and determination to run even when you’re not seriously injured, so maybe she’s got it in her. And if she could manage it at all it would be a huge advantage for her. Not a rational reason to support her, but you know what I mean.

I imagine he’ll suspend campaigns for a period of time, than start back slowly and discreetly. As has been pointed out, he can use this time to fund raise and make contacts.

In a message posted to Twitter on Saturday, Democratic nominee Joe Cunningham said that he was suspending his campaign until further notice.

About two weeks before Election Day in 1892, First Lady Caroline Harrison died. President Benjamin Harrison’s opponent, former President Grover Cleveland, suspended active campaigning (in whatever form it existed at the time).

When Missouri Senate candidate Governor Mel Carnahan died in a plane crash in October 2000, his opponent, Senator John Ashcroft, suspended his campaign.

No matter what happens, Sanford just bobs back up to the surface. Shamelessness has its own rewards.

I would say her run is likely at a end … anytime they cut out intestine that is a slow recovery. She will lose 3 weeks easily.

She may not be able to run an active campaign, but I think she’ll still be the favorite. It’s a pretty safe R district, isn’t it?

Can’t resist pointing out that the dead guy still won.

What would it take to shut down Mark Sanford’s political career? The Appalachian Trail failed to do it. Losing in a primary might now not be enough. This guy is a political cat, on about his 8th life.

Sort of sounds like a “Rosemary’s Baby” scenario. I wonder if Sanford has been casting spells…

This accident is very unfortunate for her, it sounds like there may be considerable recovery involved, given the extent of her injuries. The other driver involved in the accident was killed. Anyone who has ever driven on SC roads knows how crappy they are-- Old Niki H. (for Hades?) refused to do anything about them, not put even a penny on tax at the gas pump.

Cunningham, Arrington’s Democratic opponent, has suspended his campaign for the interim. He has a compelling campaign video, he is unabashedly anti-tRump, but he is also anti-Pelosi. He may have a real chance in the 1st district- it also doesn’t hurt that he has white-boy matinee- idol good looks.

Based on the initial description of her injuries, (and my own experience in a serious car crash), I don’t see how she can campaign again, anytime soon. The fractures alone will take at least 12 weeks (3 months) to heal. The abdominal surgeries are another complication.

If this had happened 3 months ago, MAYBE she could have recovered in time to run, but the earliest she can only get back on the trail, full time, is the middle to the end of September. This is a disaster for the GOP in what is the only “swing” district in S.C. (Charleston).

Maybe Sanford can run as an independent and then caucus with the Dems ? After Trump’s drubbing, I don’t think he can run as a Republican. Who knows in this crazy environment.

In any case, thoughts and prayers for Ms. Arrington’s full and speedy recovery.

Democrats – classy.
Republicans – crassy.

If she lives or dies makes no difference in my life. I don’t know her. What I do know is, she will probably work to take healthcare away from millions including children. Screw her.

Sanford used Pelosi very successfully against Elizabeth Colbert when he was launching his comeback. She harped on the Appalachian Trail stuff a little too hard AND the “demon Pelosi” trope really helped Sanford close the deal.

Are you insane? This is still SOUTH CAROLINA.

I hope she recovers fully and heeds the advice of her doctors. Getting back out there too soon might work for the right now but can lead to very serious complications down the road. You can’t walk off those injuries. Don’t try.

I edited the above for accuracy. So many in this country don’t want to raise taxes. At all, Ever. They do however want roads, bridges and railways maintained and improved. They are generally in favor of better healthcare. They want better weather forecasting, better disease control. All this costs money. and friendly neighborhood billionaire isn’t interested in all of these things and doesn’t need Social Security or Medicare. Yet we keep giving him tax cuts to spite ourselves. There’s a portion of our country that believes in the “voodoo economics” couple them with another portion that seems to live in mortal fear that one penny of their tax dollar might benefit a non-white person. We can’t reach those folks. we need to get the ones that are on the fence though. WE must find a way to wake them up.

It’s South Carolina. The party identification on the ballot is all the campaigning she will need to win.

Agreed. The woman’s last name was - ominously - White.

And indeed, thoughts if not prayers.
