Discussion for article #236437
Wait - where does the article say he was the number-three leader of Al Q - I mean ISIL?
I don’t know, but I think I prefer a thought out plan of action as opposed to the overly efficient neoconyahu jump in with both feet style.
The " neoconyahu jump in with both feet style" is much preferable to invading countries with conventional forces. This is exactly the correct way to battle these organizations.
A murky situation at best. Syria (Assad’s part) claims they ran an operation. The Americans are saying they ran one essentially the same as the Syrians did. OK, who did what?? And to whom?? There’s no way to verify any of this.
Something went down, we don’t know what.
You agree, that it is a thing. That’s a start. But, really aren’t we talking past each other?
I don’t think there is any excuse for neocons who base their lies on erroneous ideology.
Perhaps, I should have said, "overly [in]efficient style. To me, overly is usually a fail.
Actually we do know what went down. But you won’t find it here at TPM

So much for Obama not doing anything to curb Isil
If that’s how my post sounded then that was not what I meant to convey at all. Sorry if it was taken that way.
I just wanted to convey that I found it odd that on other sites the Assad gov’t claimed an intense fire fight in a certain town at which a senior guy who controlled ISIS oil and did other bad stuff and at the same time in the same town we claim essentially the same thing (with fewer deaths claimed). Now, I trust our Gov’t a bunch more than I would anyone in Syria. And I think Obama has been stellar in pursuit of folk who need to be dealt with. And those who say he hasn’t been involved and hasn’t made the difficult decisions are clueless as to how our military and oiur Commander-in-Chief operate.
I’m curious as to who “Abu Sayyaf” is. That name translates, according to a CNN reporter, as “the father”.
ISIS is being bombed daily, and decimated by American fire power, but you would never know it by watching FOX News. According to them Obama is a Muslim extremist, and an ISIS supporter.
they all tend to use noms de guerre, most frequently of the form Abu somebody, with the Abu part meaning literally father (somewhat similar to the way French officers referred to their troops as “mes enfants”)
I’m sure this is the mission and even if lucky, the right outcome has to happen upon occasion. We aren’t just bee bopping around playing GI Joe are we?
Or alternatively the folks at Fox call Obama weak and indecisive and out of the loop. And for good measure they’ll say he wasn’t involved in the raid that got Osama bin Laden. And then they’ll pivot and call him a tyrannical dictator. Sometimes they’ll do it on the same sentence.
Apparently, this is a BFD, as Biden would say. The attack by Special Forces was well prepared and grounded in good intelligence. They had hoped to capture the guy, but he was killed in the hand to hand combat that ensued.
They DID get his computers, meticulous books, and a trove of other information. They also got his wife, who is alive and talking to her captors. Incidentally they freed a young Yazidi woman this man had made his slave.
What’s the big deal is this: Abu Sayyaf was the chief accountant for ISIS, in charge of smuggling and getting payments for the oil and antiquities ISIS has captured.
They also now know the names of the middle men all over the world he dealt with to get paid for these oil-and-antiquities acquisitions, which are the main source, we are told, of ISIS’ funding.
Helene Cooper of the NYT, who tries to minimize and belittle everything Obama does, says sneeringly that it was tantamount to getting Al Capone’s accountant.
She doesn’t seem to realize that Al Capone’s accountant is who brought Al and the whole mob down: IRS tax evasion charges put them in jail.
As I said, this is a BFD.
ISIS wants America to come and fight them on their lands and on their terms. Not likely, esp. on their terms. And in the long term those people ISIS rules will become disenchanted with their brutal style. The only way to resolve the madness is to find a way to where Sunni and Shia can coexist. al Malaki blew it in Iraq.
It remains to be seen if this raid was a big deal or not.
