Discussion: US Border Agents Shoot Canadian Man Waving Replica Handgun

Discussion for article #231402

This sounds like attempted suicide by cop. He didn’t get his way with the police, he changed tactics and went with what he thought would be better odds.

I feel sorry for the officers involved in these types of cases.

p.s. and looking at the time there could be alcohol involved…

Poor attempt at suicide. Once he got stateside waving Skittles, his cell phone or his wallet at the police would have sufficed. Or…he could have offered to sell one of them a cigarette.

USA, where the cops fulfill your suicide by cop wishes. #PureMichistan

Let that be a lesson to you. If you want to get shot by law enforcement, come to the US. You’re wasting your time in Canada.

He was too close to Canada. You have to go a few miles into the states
before you can be suicided by cop.

Actually, US Border Patrol, and he wasn’t killed. I’m sure you would have disarmed him safely, in your Iron Man suit.

Hammond said the suspect was hit once in the arm, and investigators
later determined that the man was actually holding a replica handgun.

It’s too bad that police involved in recent shootings of people who turned out to be unarmed didn’t immediately resort to killing the suspect. The agents in this case had lot more justification in using lethal force because the suspect was advancing on them with what appeared to be a real gun. The kid who was killed by Cleveland police and the man shot in a Walmart who was holding an air rifle he was thinking of buying posed no similar threat, but they were killed anyway.

Maybe the Canadian police have been trained to spot fake/toy weapons.

Maybe the Canadian police have been trained not to shoot people unnecessarily.

This guy wasn’t white?

Actually, I suspect they just missed. All law enforcement types are trained to aim for killing shots to center mass and not to use the gun unless they intend to kill.

American Police Training Manual: Shoot first. Ask questions later. Rely on Blind Justice to answer those questions.

Next victim.

Time to build a fence!

More like: Just shoot. No questions asked.

Actually, since his “gun” was not a gun at all, the iron man suit could be left at home.

If you want to be shot by US law enforcement, be black and twelve…

Possibly. But maybe border agents are trained differently, or perhaps the agent who fired the shot just didn’t feel like killing someone that day.

CBP Field Officers ARE trained differently. They expect to encounter a port runner or other ‘crazy’ behavior at any time, and are rigorously trained to act according to very specific types of scenarios. Their law enforcement interactions are typically of an entirely different nature than ordinary cops on the beat. At land border crossing for instance, a vehicle might try to run them over, or simply attack them as an official US frontier outpost. It happens more often than you might suspect.

Being black is sufficient.
