Not to minimize the tragedy of these events but I wish these reports would phrase things differently. The trains in these cases seldom have any choice, they simply cannot stop quickly enough. Rather than write that the train “hit the bus” it would be more accurate to say “The bus pulled (or stopped) in front of the oncoming train.” It more correctly assigns responsibility to the vehicle rather than the train.
