Go Longhorn students! Guns have no place on the campus of any college or university, much less that of one of the world’s great universities like UT. The university is a place for learning, contemplation, peaceful debate, civility and the advancement of the body of public knowledge. It is not a place to revisit the Gunfight at OK Corral.

Further, to initiate concealed carry on the 50th anniversary of Charles Whitman’s rampage from the campus clock tower in 1966 is a direct affront and insult to all those who died and were injured on that dark day. The Texas legislators who passed this measure should be ashamed – but I doubt that there is any shame in them.

Guns on campus is not a funny idea to me. Under no circumstances will my grandson, when he is college age, be attending such a school. That the Texas Legislature passed such a law shows a callous, willful, and calculated, disregard for life. They would stop abortion if they could to save a baby but should that child grow then who the fuck cares if he/she gets killed by another student or teacher. There are no words in English, Gaelic or the other tongues of men for this reprehensible and egregious disregard for potential voters (putting it in terms a politician might understand)…

Oh my. They didn’t, did they?

Especially when an aspiring student can attend a really good university in Germany for free.

That’s an exceptionally appropriate picture to choose, Caitlin, given the subject matter…

It was actually illegal to sell dildos in Texas until 2008.

Edit to add:

Republican Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott defended the dildo ban, arguing that the state had “morality based” reasons for the law, including “discouraging prurient interests in autonomous sex and the pursuit of sexual gratification unrelated to procreation.” Following the 5th Circuit ruling, Abbott’s office requested a rehearing en banc, but the court declined.

Interesting. Once, wearing my longhorn shirt on the east coast, I was asked by a female OB/GYN why I had the female reproductive system on my chest.

Tell us how you really feel, now…

Unfortunately, yes they did. I’m trying to find words to describe this level of callous disregard for adult human life but I think they don’t exist.

So the Texas lege allows concealed carry in the Capitol?

Yes! and lots and lots of people who work at the capitol get CC permits even if they don’t own guns because…wait for it…if you have a CC permit you don’t have to go through security!

My anger seems to be short circuiting my vocabulary.
Perhaps this image of a Texan legislator might suffice:

My understanding is that when the legislature passes laws, they all take effect on the same day every year. It is just a coincidence, and interesting one, that it happens to be the same day that Whitman did his deed.

BTW, Whitman felt bad about what he did, and left a note in his house say he knew what he was about to do was wrong but was helpless to stop himself. He requested that an autopsy look for a brain tumor. They did an autopsy and in fact Whitman did have a brain tumor that would have explained his lack of impulse control.

How fitting to use that photo to illustrate this story…
