Well this is a special case. The Nazi Party formed the Volksdeutsche Mittelstelle, the “Coordination Centre for Ethnic Germans” living outside Germany, which targeted a large US population of German-Americans with a heavy propaganda campaign Heim ins Reich, asking them to “return home to the Reich.” Many returned and fought for the Nazis. But the German-American Bund was a direct production of the NSDAP and the Ministry of Propaganda under Goebbels, and later under the SS. It is a rather complex and interesting history.
Ok - my hands are up = I concende
There is nothing to concede, we are both right. It’s just a really fucked up case “on many sides.”
Yeah it is. And thanks.
BTW if you are near a TV that can receive MSNBC, the interview with the filmmaker who did that documentary piece is coming up in just a few minutes on a rerun of Joy Reid’s show. I wish that film could get a wider audience.
Let the Nazis speak and establish that they are now the heart of the Republican Party now. I want posterity to know where this scourge started and who backed them to the hilt. Trump has huuuge boots to fill trying to surpass Hitler, but I’m sure Bannon will work his magic again with Putin’s help.
Lee Atwater and Karl Rove should also get just credit for the rise of those like Spencer. The Conservative Movement has never been anything more than a hate group disguised as a Christian Right fantasy.
So, as religious patriots, many of us Christian incidentally, we have to listen to these pep rallies for hate and exclusion?
Meanwhile, Spencer’s little organization never has to be soiled with a lecture on love from the clergy?
How come they are entitled to wrap themselves within their own little blankie, never challenged by real American or Christian values? Is that the deal?
Great. Just freaking great. Nice job, Donald.
So when will the University of Cincinnati allow ISIL/Daesh to give a speech?
If they are going to let one group of evil sociopaths peddle their vile evil murderous ideology, then “free speech” requires that they let every evil sociopath peddle their vile evil murderous ideology.
At least ISIL/Daesh isn’t conspiring to commit mass murder on a global scale with AGW.
ISIS: We are next.
They should make sure that campus security is geared toward protecting residents of the campus. Any additional security above and beyond the usual will be the speakers responsibility.
Simples : Turn up and laugh at the Silly Little Boy .
I don’t think anyone has a right to speak and schools should not have a lineup of nuts for their lecture series but Richard Spencer is more or less the leader of the Alt-Right movement and that makes him an important voice in contemporary political discourse.
As long as they have a moderator there to hold his feet to the fire when it comes to his beliefs I think it will be worth it because I’m sure Spencer will deny being a racist and an anti-Semite and so on and his words he has spoken can be used against him.
This reminds me of Tim Russet having David Duke on Meet The Press or Ahmadinejad speaking at Columbia…their radical views will be exposed one way or another by opening themselves up to being pressed by the moderator and the audience. Kind of like Ahmadinejad being asked about gay rights in Iran and Ahmadinejad stating that Iran “doesn’t have any of those people” and wanting to know where the person who asked the question heard that.
I can see why any public university, funded by taxpayers, must allow free speech. But are they obligated to pay for security? I’m just curious about that. I can’t seem to recall, when people marched in favor of civil rights in the taxpayer-funded public spaces of America, the federal or local governments spending huge amounts of public money to defend them with security forces. They usually used the security forces to beat the fucking hell out of them.
I likes your thinkin’, Tena!
And I think a very, very, very LOUD rock concert outside the venue would be a nice touch, with free earplugs to the anti-fascist crowd while the amps are cranked to “11” (H/T: Nigel Tufnel, “Spinal Tap”).
Think of them along the same lines as the Westboro Baptist Church gang.
Got to see them when Bill Maher had a show here. As they were singing some song about God hating fags I got a few in the crowd to join me in holding up our lighters and yelling for them to do Free Bird next.
Maybe you could even get a good Spinal Tap tribute band. There has to be a few of them out there.
They would be obligated to pay for security at any event that requires it, football games, concerts, etc.
Totally different, those people were practicing civil disobedience, breaking minor laws by blocking traffic, etc. The reaction by LEO at that time was atrocious for sure, but that’s a different scenario. If the neo Nazi’s just decided to march through campus unannounced, in no way would the be afforded any kind of security, unless they were attacked by someone.
“we have to listen to these pep rallies for hate and exclusion?”
No you do not have to listen. No one is forcing anyone else to listen to what he has to say. In fact the best reaction would be if no one showed up to listen to him. If the only things he encountered on campus were ridicule and indifference that would be perfect.
Because people on the left continue to confront them and try to shout them down, taunt them, etc. Just ignore assholes. Anyone listening to him is already stupid, and if you yell at them they will become more loyal to the idiot speaking. A better idea is to have a counter speech later and try to educate people. Either ignore these idiots, or just laugh at them. When you yell and taunt you are doing exactly what they want, and it makes the left look just as stupid as them.
PERFECT, that’s exactly what I am talking about.
