INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis police say a 2-year-old boy shot and killed himself after taking a gun from his mother’s purse on the kitchen counter when she wasn’t watching.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department say officers found the child with a single gunshot wound when they arrived at the home around 9 p.m. Wednesday. The child died at a children’s hospital.
Police said in a news release Thursday that the mother is cooperating with detectives who questioned her before she was released.
Police say the mother and child were the only people at home when the shooting happened.
Police have not released the identities of the mother and child.

Goofing around at his home over the weekend in Philadelphia, Maurice Phillips committed an act of unimaginable carelessness with a gun, police officials said, accidentally killing his 4-year-old daughter with a shot to the head.
The father came into the room where his several children were watching TV and playing and waving a gun “around like a toy”, hit the child in the back of head. then struck his 5-year old daughter with a closed fist and wiped blood from his hand onto her shirt “trying to frame that child.”
