Discussion: Uber Charged $100 Minimum Fare To Flee Sydney Hostage Crisis Area

Discussion for article #231193

This company just comes across as the Craigslist of “taxi” services: utter sleaze.

Just good old capitalism at work, until you are caught screwing somebody over and it goes public.

Except for the preadtory lending-type car loans to drivers, all the problems with Uber were obviously on the horizoin from the get-go. They were trying to exploit a loophole and use it to be unregulated and of course they have all the problems that regulation was meant to address and exposed all the failings of libertarianism. I have dozens of apps on my phone (most of which i actually use), Uber never seemed worth the effort.

At least they didn’t rape anyone or proposition them to have oral sex. This is a positive step for UBER.

I buy and sell things on craigslist all the time. There isn’t one damn thing sleazy about that.

I think I’d rather take my chances on Craigslist. Uber seems to be run by assholes.

It’s hyperbole, man, relax.

While Uber has many a problems related to how they operate outside of regulation in a lot of geographies, I don’t think it was intentional on Uber’s part to raise the prices temporarily in this case. These systems are coded in advance and respond to demand and supply. There is no way a computer system would “know” that the surge in demand is related to a humanitarian crisis.

Of course, acknowledging the problem and refunding the users was a conciliatory move on their part.

Reason #1 why regulations for taxi services exist
