Discussion: U.S. Rep Asks Justice Department To Investigate Alabama DMV Closures

Discussion for article #241389

You can’t fight city hall.

I hope hate mail is a thing she enjoys.

The U.S. House member representing Alabama’s only majority minority district district has requested that the Department of Justice investigate the closure of 31 driver’s licenses offices in the state as a possible violation of her constituents’ constitutional right to vote.

Damn straight!

Wow, that was fast. Great news. A quite straightforward letter, well thought out and written. Gotta believe the DOJ will jump on this immediately and start subpoenaing Republican House and Senate leaders, the Attorney General, the senior staff of the relevant department and I do hope the governor too.

Interesting too if they corral all the e-mails, letters, and any oral testimony from legislators that drafted and voted for this bill. Gee, if they can go after Hillary for the same things, turnabout is fair play, eh?

And one just has to know there is damning evidence of exactly what they were trying to achieve: suppress black and democratic voters!

As Caucasians trend towards eventually minority status in the populace their efforts at staving off inevitable loss of power will result in more actions like these DMV closures, not less. Put 20 guys in a ring, 10 to a side, and tell them to fight. Fisticuffs ensue. Now, put 15 in the ring, 5 against 10. Those 5 are going to be a helluva lot more desperate and nasty in their efforts knowing they’re at a numerical disadvantage. The more dire your circumstances the more extreme your instinct and methods employed to survive. And the circumstances of Caucasian dominance of U.S politics will approach dire over the next generation. At least from their point of view.

The DOJ has been very solid on voting issues. I think they could be much tougher on banksters but this is not a topic where they’ve been weak.

I don’t see it as sarcasm. The DoJ WILL investigate this. And undoubtedly, the ACLU WILL be launching lawsuits. Alabama is going to end up spending even more money they don’t have fighting it, and will ultimately have to re-open these offices. Its just far to of an egregious act to be ignored.

Don’t let go of this Rep Sewell-- this is as important a cause as you may ever champion.

Pure fantasy - but really wish that the people who claim to be willing to defend with their lives - the right to possess guns … would be as committed to the right to vote.

Actually, from where I viewed this point on the timeline several years ago-- we’re in mid-scorched-earth circumstances regarding the kicking-and-screaming of RWNJ behavior-- as it relates to the dismantling of White Privilege inside our political process.

But it won’t take a full generation for the effects to wane-- perhaps a political generation-- a dozen years IMO.
We’re in a period where social constructs are changing so rapidly-- and the (R)s are baring-their-asses to a younger voting public that has no patience for intolerance.

I might be a bit optimistic-- as I’m hopeful to a fault.

Not sure where the tipping point might be - but there is a point when those with the numerical advantage get thoroughly fed up with the nasty & underhanded efforts - and retaliate - in the extreme …

She can do that. Or she can do as the businessmen do and “make every negative a positive”. No point in arguing what the Alabama GOP’ers did this. We know that despite their denials. But if you want to stop it make it not work or even better make it achieve the opposite of what was expected.

Get those folks registered NOW. Get it all in order. What do they need? Birth Certificates…easy Vital Records in their place of birth has them. SS Cards? Same thing : SS Has them.

Set up centers in Churches or whatever. Find out what is needed, get it and then get these folks to wherever there is a registration point and register them. Anyone can help someone get critical records. Know folks good with a computer…get them to help. Know folks with access to buses or other multi passenger vehicles? Get them on your team.

Get what you need and get going en mass. This closure stuff is a hurdle but its not a wall. Organize and act. As soon as the scam is seen to be a motivator and not an obstruction it goes away. Bullies don’t like folks that fight back.

Then folks…for God’s sake VOTE!

[/quote] So you’re saying Attorney General Loretta Lynch will ignore? You feel sure about that?

Until reform of gerrymandering laws and rules is accomplished the GOP minority in many states can exert control for longer than it is rightfully theirs to have. Even now they’ve successfully ensconced a majority in both houses of Congress in no small measure due to perfectly legal but morally dubious methods. I’m not sanguine about SCOTUS helping minorities gain even footing in the voting booth. They already allowed the partial gutting of the Voting Rights Act. I look for similar losses in that venue in the future. I think those suggesting a 10-15 year timeline as to significant gains against those currently in power are overly optimistic.

15th Amendment to the Constitution:

Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Adopted on March 30, 1870. 145 years later we’re STILL fighting over this. And it’s going to change soon? I think not.
